Broiler Average Rises Slightly
At Lancaster Exchange Thursday
LANCASTER The average
price paid for broilers at the Oct.
17 auction at the Lancaster Poul
try Exchange advanced slightly
from the week before. A total of
187,200 birds averaged 18.88 cents
with the range being from 18 to
2014 cents.
A year ago 138,530 birds aver
aged 17.92 cents.
At the recent sale 500 red broil
ers sold at 16V4 cents; two lots of
Leghorns, 1,285 head, sold for 12
and 12V* cents; a lot of SOOheavy
fowl brought 16 cents and 75‘ tur
keys sold for 2814 cents.

Most classes shared in the smaller
receipts except for cows; those
rather plentiful. Slaughter steers
and heifers mostly steady with
last Wednesday, some sales weak.
Best action this week centered
on fed steers 1,100 lbs. and light
er. Steers averaging over 1,150
lbs. and grading low choice and
below * particularly slow. Cows
mostly 50 cents lower than last
Wednesday. Bulls about steady

Crop Reporting Board estimates
the number of cattle and calves
on feed for market in the 13 ma

head.
This is 11 per cent less than the

earlier, and 13 per cent below the
number on feed on July 1. Mar
keting intentions of cattle feed
