Hackman, who pioneered the establishment of conservation farming in Lancaster County by changing from “square Held” fanning to modern contour strip cropping , was cited Aug. 2 at the annual meeting of the Keystone Chapter. The award was based on Hack man’s work in helping to create the Lancaster County Soil Conser vation District, his activities as vice chairman of the district, his enlhusium in conducting conser vation touts and presenting illus rated talks, his efforts in organ izing watershed associations and his practice of conservation on his own farm. In addition to operateing a 100- acre farm in Lancaster County, Hackman is a science teacher m the public schools system in Lan caster County He is also first vice president of the Pennsylvania As sociation of Soil Conservation Dis tnc Directois, a director and sec retary of the Lancaster County Dairy Held Improvment Associ ation and a director and secretary ot (he Lancaster County Holstein Bleeders Association During the business meeting Howard W Busch, area conserva tionist of the U S Soil Conserva tion Service, was elected presi dent of the Keystone Chapter; David G. Unger, soil conservation adviser, State Department of Agriculture, was named vice pre sides and John O. Rigo of State College, secretary treasuier State Secretary of Agnculure William L. Henning was principal speaker during the meeting and cited the need for more trained personnel in soil conservation vvoik. Connecticut Declared Brucellosis Free Effective July 26 the USDA declared Connecticut to have a modified-certified brucellosis-free status. It is the third state to achieve such a status this year and the eighth in the US. to have such status.
