Food Consumption Up
While Calories Down
Noting that April 7 Is World
Health Day, Dr. Hazel K. Stie
beling, director of USDA’s newly
formed Institute of Home Econo
mics, said the average Ameri
can’s diet has improved in many
respects since the beginning of
the century.
We eat fewer calories per per
son—3,22o per day as compared
to 3,490 m the early 1900’s—
hut increased consumption of
milk, meat, poultry, fish, eggs,
dark green and yellow vege
tables, and citrus fruit provides
us with more of many elements
essential to good nutrition.
Seed Prices Higher
Supplies Mostly Good
The Agricultural Marketing
Service reports that there are
plentiful supplies of alfalfa, al
sike clover, Ladino clover, rye
grass, tall fescue and most lawn
grass seeds. *
Seed supplies about equal to
normal domestic needs include
red clover, sweetclover, whit
clover, lespedeza, orchardgrass
redtop and Sudangrass. '
In short supply, generally, are
those seeds m demand for dry
land areas—creasted wheatgrass,
brome grass, practical! all range
grasses and Timothy. Retail
prices of most seeds are relative
ly high this year.
