There" are three types ot these drugs. The Meprobamate drugs,-are most useful in quieting barking and whining dogs which get lone some during their stay in the am nia] hospital at must be confined at home. Phenythiozine derivatives calm nervous dogs and make vicious dogs easier to handle. They, also reduce the amount of anesthetic needed to deaden pain. The lower level of anesthesia makes surgery generally safer for older animals which are usually the ones requir ing surgical treatment. The third group of drugs are chiefly used to control convul sions in both man and animals. Tne tranquihzing drugs cannot be considered as a replacement lor kindness and gentleness in treating animals, but they allow the veterinarian to handle ani mals with less use of restraining devices.
