HARRISBURG Due to lack of competitive interest, the long standing Pennsylvania Farm Show hoiseshoe pitching contest for state championship honors will be discontinued at the 1957 Farm Show scheduled heie Jan 14-18, the Farm Show Commis sion announced today. For the same reason, the an nual log sawing championship contest will be eliminated for the coming show, the commis sion said Both statewide events will be re scheduled at future shows when the commission receives sufficient evidence of competi tive interest, commission mem bers emphasized. The Farm Show horseshoe pitching contest dates back to 1931 Competition declined in recent years. At the last show there wore but six entries when John Fulton, Carlisle, Cumber land County, won his eighth state championship He first won in 1936 and repeated m 1938, 1940, 1947, 1949, 1951, 1954 and 1956 Under contest rules a win ner could not compete two years in -succession Log sawing was introduced in 1948 Two-man team entries dwindled until the last show when two of the three teams en teicd were forced to withdraw on the contest date, one due to i r lness and the other because of an injury sustained by a team member The match went by de fault to John and Jacob Suit, a brother team from Millville, Cc lumbia County. Interest in the state cham pionship horse pulling contest Bethlehem Sugar Mill has bee,n increasing in recent years and this event will be held as usual in the large arena on Wednesday night, Jan. 16. Entries close on Dec 22.
