Key representatives of Pennsylvania’s $23 million broiler industry will gather at Hollidaysburg vn May 15th for the selection of the champion chickens oif 1956. The occasion is the state finals of the IQth annual Junior Chic ken-of-Tomorrow Gontest, spon sored by the State Poultry Fed eration to encourage production of better meat-type chickens. A record entry list of 733 farm youngsters are competing. Mrs. George M. Leader, wife of the Governor, wM present plaques, ribbons and cash awards: to the champion, reserve cham pion and top placings. Dr; Wil liam L. Henning, State Secretary of Agriculture, will speak to the contestants and poultry industry representatives. Broiler Barbecue The awards will be made at a broiler barbecue, and the Fed eration will also make a special citation to Howard C. Pierce of the A & P Food Stores, who originated the state and national Chieken-of-Tomorrow contests. Dr. Pierce is the poultry re search director of A & P. Dr. E I Robertson, Lancaster, chairman of the contest, said: “We feel our annual competi tion has stimulated interest in better broilers and has been an important factor in the impres sive growth of Pennsylvania’s broiler industry.” “Federal-state crop reporting service statistics show that broil er production has increased 360 per cent during the 10-year span,” Dr. Robertson said. “Last year we produced more than 31,000,000 birds, and we expect 1956 will be even higher.” Auctions 'at the Ifive regional contest sites Hollidaysburg, Coates, Franconia, Mandata and Butler will conclude the con test to sell all entries in lots of 12 birds.
