di pw Page 12 Penn State Brandywine men’s baseball team sits at a record of 14-18, with only two games remaining. Unfortunately the team will not be able to make to a .500 winning percentage season. Al- though the record reflects struggles throughout the season, it does not reflect the hard work, devotion, and teamwork that everyone on the team put in. The team had a chance to grow together and learn a lot about everyone else on the team. Although, it is a shame that the seniors are leaving the school with a losing record, for their final year, they have had their good times with the Penn State team. They have had a chance to meet a lot of people and make many new friends along their journey. As for the rest of the team, hopefully the majority are staying at the Brandywine campus, so the rebuilding is a little easier. The seniors that are leaving are impossible to replace, with their knowledge on the field and their experience play- ing baseball in college. Hopefully the team is able to make the proper changes and bring in the new talent needed to continue to make a run at winning another championship for the school. Even with the teams struggles this year, they did not have that bad of a season. Especially towards the end, when they seemed to be pull- ing it together better. The team has won seven of their last eleven games, not counting the last two games of the regular season. These wins include a two game sweep of Penn State Wilkes-Barre, Penn State Worthington Scranton, and Penn State York. They played very well against the other Penn State teams the second half of the season, after los- ing a couples games against other branches early in the season. The team will wrap up the season against Penn College Tuesday April 24th, who they have not yet played this season. Hopefully they are able to continue their winning ways to end the season. After their last game, the coaches will start looking for players to with talent good enough to wear the Penn State Brandywine uniform. As I’m sure coaches already have started, they are able = to continue looking with no distractions. Along with the talent, the coaches look at the players per- sonality and sportsmanship. These are all necessary | for playing collegiate sports. Coaches will not take players that have bad attitudes towards other play- ers, coaches, and umpires. How the players carry & themselves on and off the field is a major decision factor if a college coach wants that player. Talent is not everything in college sports, although a big part, coaches do look at grades, and most schools will put athletes in study groups. So as the baseball season wraps up, we can start to look forward to next year and the pos- sibilities that can happen. If you played a sport in high school, then you may be considering playing a sport in college as well. Many high school athletes do not want their athletic career to end there, but to continue in college. Penn State Brandywine makes this dream a possible reality. While some colleges do not allow walk-on’s to their team, Penn State Brandywine, in most cases allows anyone who wants a chance to play, to try out for the team they want. Penn State Brandywine offers many inter-collegiate sports. These sports require a lot of devotion to practice and making yourself a better team player and athlete. With Brandywine being a small school, coaches also devote time for athletes to focus on their studies. Many coaches require a designated study time for athletes. As with most schools, Brandywine focuses on athlete’s performance on the field and in the classroom. Students become ineligible to play if their gpa falls below a certain point. Brandywine offers students different options when choosing sports. These sports include baseball, soccer, tennis, golf, ice hockey, cross country, and basket- ball to name the men’s sports. For the women’s sports there are basketball, cross country, volleyball, and tennis. Keep your eyes posted around campus and check your email accounts for flyers and information in regards to try outs and meetings. Brandywine offers intramurals for its students to continue to be athletic or just a way to relax from the stress of being a college student. Brandywine also allows the students the chance to create a club sport or intramural. These sports also compete with other colleges and universities in the area much like an inter-collegiate sport just without the long travels. Club sports are also a great idea if you were a high school athlete and are considering playing in col- lege. Club sports can give you an insight on how athletics around campus work and the time that they may require. Although club sports do not require the time dedication that inter-collegiate sports do, it can help show students time management skills and how to separate school from athletics. This can be used as a small preview for student athletes looking to play collegiate sports but just are not The club sports that Penn State Brandywine of- fers but not limited to, roller hockey, ice hockey, badmin- ton, soccer, basketball, and cheerleading, also including volleyball, flag football, and dodgeball. All club sports and intramurals are funded through the student activity fee and administered by the Brandywine athletic depart- ment. Brandywine also holds mini tournaments or events such as, a home run derby, half-court basketball games, and soccer shootouts. These events and the club sports are all considered, “students play at their own risk events.” This means you should take into consideration your own athletic abilities. The school cannot be held accountable for any injury you may sustain while participating in intramural sports or activities. The responsibility of signing up and gathering a team falls solely on the students. The captain of the team is also responsible for making the team aware of sportsmanship and respect. The students themselves are the ones who can keep intramurals up and running. Just remember that it only takes one person to ruin it for ev- eryone else, so make sure that you respect the game and the other players around you, and keep in mind that you are still on a college campus and not at a public park. The intramurals, events, and club sports are all ran by the Penn State Brandywine Athletic Department. If you are curious about any of the sports this campus offers or are interested in possibly starting your own club sport please contact the Athletic Director: James Gastner at jlg257@psu.edu or by phone at 610-892-1331. Thank you for taking the time to read this and hopefully you consider participating in our schools activi- ties and expand your college life and meet new people.
