The main show that I believe causes issues is MTV’s 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom. I think these two shows shine a spotlight on these lifestyles and shows girls that it can be done, and if you get pregnant at 16 you can be on TV. I realize that these shows do show some downfalls to being a teen mom but I think showing everyone on TV: is endorsing the action instead of preventing it, which I believe MTV was trying to do. Another show which plays into young pregnancies is The Secret Life of the American Teenager, this show importantly is bad for young girls because it shows high school girls getting pregnant and ending up with the father of the babies. In reality there is a low percentage in which teen girls who get pregnant end up with the baby’s father. There are so many of these shows that provide the wrong messages for the young generations, that I believe are making them act up more than we ever did throughout our childhood. Believe me I am not sitting here telling you not to watch these shows or support them, because believe me I’m the first person you will find watching, 16 and Pregnant, Teen Mom, Secret Life and every other reality TV series you can think of. These shows are not only promoting teen pregnancy, but this past season of teen mom talked about young Janelle smoking weed, her boyfriend was snorting co- caine, and they both ended up in jail. The show did not show these actions but by saying it I believe they were sending a message to the young people watching the show that it doesn’t matter how young you are, you can still do all of these things. Shows like these, especially this season of Teen Mom also gave terrible influ- ence to those young girls who have bad relationships with their mothers, it is in no way shape or form ok for a young girl to yell or talk to their mother the way Janelle did in this season of Teen Mom 2. I am not telling you to avoid watching these shows, and I am not necessarily saying MTV shouldn’t be showing them. How can we watch these shows and let the younger generations know that this is not the reality for most people. Is MTV right by produc- ing these shows and put- ting these messages out there, or are the parents of these young kids not doing their part by watching and explaining to their kids that it is just a show and it is not that easy for everyone, because not every girl who gets pregnant at the age of 16 has the luxury of being on TV, which in the long run makes you pretty good money.
