Page 16 PSU Brandywine Baseball By Judy Bowker — Lion's Eye Editor-In-Chief — jlb5706(@psu.edu Brandywine Baseball opened their season on Thursday March 17 on their home turf versus Neumann University. It was a tough loss with the final score being 5-21. This was the boy’s first game after returning from spring training at Cocoa Beach, FL where they saw two wins and three losses. When speaking to freshman, Anthony Kine, he said, “I think we have potential, I just think we need to work on the little things.” Matt Hendrixson (Garnet Valley) was the VIP for Penn State Brandywine’s 9-5 victory over Valley Forge Christian Col- lege in 13 innings on Tuesday March 22nd. Hendrixson hit a walk- off grand slam to move the Lions to their third win of the season. Hendrixson also pitched the last five innings, recording nine strike- outs. Dan Cavaliere (Marple Newtown) had a big day at the plate, going 4 for 5 in the win. Good game Boy's. Remaining Schedule 2011 Wed. April 13 Penn State Hazleton 2 PM Sat. Author: Jack Norworth Temple Downs The Lions in March Madness By Sean Morgan - Lions Eve Staff Writer - sdm5219@psu.edu Penn State men’s basketball suffered a devastating loss to the Temple Owls in a close 66-64 game on Thursday March 17, in the second round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. The #10 seed Nittany Lions were one of many teams to lose in the last seconds of a game during the first weekend of this year’s tournament. Penn State made the championship tournament for the first time since 2001, where they lost in the sweet sixteen to none other than the Temple Owls. The #7 seed Temple Owls beat Penn State in the last seconds of the game when Juan Fernandez hit a tough shot with .4 seconds left on the clock. Fernandez had 23 points and 3 assists in 39 minutes in Temple’s second round win. “I was thinking about shooting a jump shot but I killed my dribble and Fra- zier was right there. For some reason he jumped over to my right and that gave me the space to go left,” said Fernandez about his shot according to SI.com. On the other side of the basketball, Penn State’s top player Talor Battle scored 23 points and had 3 assists in the crushing defeat. Battle hit a game tying three point shot with less than 15 seconds left in the game. “Right when I shot, it felt so good. I saw Reggie Miller and them going nuts, so I figured I was pretty far when I shot,” Battle commented according to CBSSports. com. Other top players for Penn State included sophomore Tim Frazier, who put up 15 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds, and senior David Jackson, who added 14 points and 4 rebounds. The Nittany Lions shot 42.1% from three compared to Temple’s 27.8% three- point percentage. The Owls did attempt 9 more foul shots than Penn State, and their 86.7% foul shooting percentage was one of the big reasons Penn State was not able to pull off the upset. The win was a sigh of relief for Temple coach Fran Dunphy. Dunphy has had no prob- lem with getting in to the tournament, just advancing in it. Dunphy has had a tough coaching career during March Madness and had lost 11 straight tournament games before beating Penn State. Dunphy said about his tournament woes, “I probably think about it less than others do, but you think about it. I would be lying if I said I didn’t. But I’m so thrilled for these kids and so thrilled to be in the tournament. We’ve had a nice run — this par- ticular group, four straight years of going to the NCAA tournament is pretty special,” according to SI.com. The Penn State basketball team had a pretty successful season overall. They were not picked to be a tournament team at the beginning of the year, and they beat Temple beats Penn State in the second round of the NCAA Men’s Bas- ketball Championship. (photo courtesy google.com) several other tournament teams during the course of the season such as Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Illinois. Penn State even won three games in three days in the Big Ten Basketball tournament to advance to the championship game against Ohio State. Ohio State, who later on became the #1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament, beat the Nittany Lions 71-60. Despite not getting an automatic bid to the tournament, Penn State most likely received their at-large bid because they reached the championship game of their conference tournament. Penn State will look to get better next year and maybe even eclipse the 20 win mark. They will lose their top scorer in Battle, who is a senior, but they will look to build on the young talent they have.
