The Lion’s Eye February 2, 2011 CE BS EN SER SS BE SU BE LA BE Eve on Campus Film Festival Hopes To Reel In Talent By Martina Delgado - Lion's Eye Staff Writer - mdd5136@psu.edu On April 26th, 2011, Susan Cur- tis, an intern from West Chester, and Matt Bodak, our Coordinator of Instructional Design Services and Assistant to the Di- rector of Academic Affairs, will bring the Penn State Brandywine Film Festival to our community, Oscar style. The Brandywine Film Festival welcomes students and alumni to come together and create their own films. Com- petitors choose their team of no more than five members and then choose from one of six categories of which their film must fit. This year’s categories include Stu- dent Life, Global Programs, Digital Video Projects, Education/Learning, Green/Sus- tainability and Alumni Showcase. Participants submitting to Stu- dent Life must make a film that is related to their student experience at Penn State Brandywine. Students who students who have studied abroad are also welcome to submit, however their submissions would go into the category of Global Programs, where they may share footage that they re- corded while they were traveling abroad. Already have an existing video you’re interested in entering? Then the Digital Video Projects and Education/ Learning categories are geared towards you! Students who have created videos for a specific class, but would like to enter it into the contest are urged to submit their work here. True to its name, the Green/Sus- tainability category is your chance to ex- press personal feelings about issues such as pollution, renewable energy, or any in their Alma Mater’s film other topic dealing with the health of our planet. Lastly is a special catego- ry known as the Alumni Showcase, which allows space for alumni that would like to participate festival. The rules of the competition are simple. Participants’ submitted work must be no lon- ger than ten minutes in length; however, it is rec- ommended that the film be between two to five minutes. All work must be submitted online via electronic format by the deadline of March 23rd 2011. Besides the experience of creat- ing your own film with friends and the fun incorporated in the process, Matt Bodak adds that “[showing that you have] sub- mitted your work to The Brandywine Film Festival can also distinguish your resume from hundreds of others.” If you need help formulating your video, there are resources on campus ready to help! Your PSU ID gives you access to The Vairo Library, which has video equipment ready for students to check out. The li- brary also offers use of Macintosh com- puters equipped with iMovie to help your team with the editing process. Media Commons trainers from University Park will also be hosting two special workshops at our Brandywine s LY, forvals) BIE = © = RE VA 0 2 TS © SU of © 3 © Jf 8. 2 ff 1 SC RE i oJ i 8 A © So 3 © 8 5 (03) = 8 S67 i Set = 0 Br 0 ho 0 0S ADD A SQUMDTRACK {0 Gl <0 > i SN = = © J I oe of campus. If you are interested in submit- ting your work to the Brandywine Film Festival or creating a film exclusively for the event, it’s not too late! Sopho- more, Political Science Major Lauren Rankin recently entered the contest with her team, and encourages all students and alumni that are pondering about entering the festival to “Just do it.” The Brandy- wine Film Festival was originally created to inspire school spirit and creativity. If there is any concern about the development of your film, Susan Curtis states “There is a lot of support for stu- dents’ submissions. If you are concerned, there will be plenty of workshops to help you.” If you have any further ques- tions regarding the guidelines of the fes- tival, please visit Brandywine’s webpage at http://brandywine.psu.edu/studentlife/ activities/filmfestival.htm. ‘Where Do You Want Your Money To Go? By Emily Cleveland EFC5051 - Lion's Eye Staff Writer - efc5051 @psu.edu Do you see areas around cam- pus that need work? Have grand ideas for new rooms, or even a new cafeteria? Penn State Brandywine’s Student Facility Fee Committee (SFFC) has, for the first time ever, released a brief online survey, and they need your help! The intention of the survey is to gather students’ opinions and receive their input concerning the dis- tribution of thousands of dollars to various areas around campus that need work. Student facility funds are used to improve the campus’s resources and create a more appealing campus environment for students to enjoy. Funds have previously been used to renovate the Main Building student lounge, as well as the Main 101 performing arts space. They have also sup- plied the athletic center with new lockers, the Tomezsko student lounge with uphol- stered furniture, and they are currently be- ing used to create a bus shelter to protect our students who rely on SEPTA for their transportation needs. “There are only a handful of stu- dents in the Facility Fee Committee. The small few of us may not share the same ideas and beliefs as the rest of the student body. In order to make these tough finan- cial decisions, we agreed that it would be more beneficial to hear from the student body as a whole rather than hope that we are an accurate representation,” Lisa Ye- rges, Director of Business Services here at Brandywine explains. She believes the survey is an innovative way to give Bran- dywine students the voice they deserve to have. The online survey consists of a list of projects that are being considered for funding. Students are asked to express how strongly they feel about each project by clicking on a button that represents one of the following: “Do Not Support”, “Neutral”, “Somewhat Support”, or “Ful- ly Support”. One such project that Yerges is particularly excited about is the cafeteria renovation. Ideally, the project would be laid out in March of 2011, with construc- tion would start in May. Students returning for the Fall semester would then be able to enjoy the completed, new and improved cafeteria lounge. Yerges and the associated team developed a blue print of the eating area which consists of brand new tables and chairs, flat screen televisions, condiment bars, revised foyer and of course, a créme de la créme paint job to disguise the cin- derblock walls. Some other potential projects currently in consideration include the cre- ation of outdoor basketball courts and a pe- destrian bridge that crosses the campus stream linking the parking lot and the student pathways more efficiently. Also in consideration is a custom electric - scoreboard for the athletic field, club room renovation in Commons, and ten- nis court replace- ment or renovation. Yerges and other SFFC mem- bers feel it is im- portant that students are given the ability to voice their opin- ions and contribute to the decisions being made, especially when it concerns how their money is spent. It is the responsibil- ity of the SFFC to ensure that facility fees are allocated in ways favorable to the stu- dent body, however it is the responsibility of the student to make sure their voice is heard.
