By Cait Hazinsky — Lion's Eye Staff Writer- ceh5240@psu.edu When we think of the Oscars we think glamour, luxury, and gorgeous gowns; how- ever, the 82nd celebration of the Academy fell a bit short. For those of you that watched this year’s show, I’m sure you could agree that the majority of designer’s clothing the stars wore was less than flattering. For example, let’s take a look at what Zoe Saldana wore—a - Givenchy dress with a tight corset-looking top made from a sparkly material (which was ac- tually quite gorgeous), but then the bottom of the dress made her look like a purple goose! As if the bundle of goose feathers weren’t enough, they decided to add several layers of purple to accentuate the hideousness. John Galliano had the same idea with the purple color, and he too went in the same direction as Givenchy. The dress designed for Dior, worn by Charlize Theron, was a pretty purple color with two flower (tulipesque) petals placed at - her chest making for an awkward bra-like ac- cent bringing attention only to the bust area. On the other hand, there were a select few that. nailed the Oscar, not with flying colors, but quite the opposite. It was a more neutral pal- ate that got the votes for best dressed at the Oscar’s. Midnight blue, pale peach, white, gray, and pastels were the colors to go with at this year’s féte. There were, however, a few gowns that were deeper in color that reached the Oscar standard, but for the most part the neutral/pastel range came out on top. Rachel McAdams wore a flow- ing gown, designed by Elie Saab Haute Couture that looked like a piece .of art- work with watercolor-like pastel patterns splashed across the silk fabric. In the same boat was Demi Moore, who wore an amaz- ing gown designed by Atelier Versace. Pale peach may be one of the hardest colors to try and pull off, but with a mixture of Demi Image courtesy of buzznet.com Moore’s elegance and the style of the dress she was able to be praised for the ensemble. On the darker side of things, Kristen Stewart wore a simple midnight blue silk gown that was floor length with her hair pulled back in a chic fashion and it really accentuated her face. This is a perfect example of less being more—you can never go wrong with an up-do and a simple dark colored dress. Overall, the fashion at this year’s Oscar show was subpar, but there were a few that were worth while. And aside from the few I focused on, there were some others that are noteworthy. Next time you’re by a com- puter take a look at the dress Sandra Bullock wore—she was her own Oscar.
