The Spring Speaker Series
By Kyrstin Camp - Lions Eye Staff Writer - ksc5136@psu.edu
The Spring Speaker Series is a
program that has been taking place at Penn
State Brandywine. According to assistant
professor of history, Julie Gallagher, the
program is an attempt to “educate students
and the community on the importance and
possibilities surrounding energy usage and
resource sustainability.” Professor Gal-
~ lagher is also a member of the committee
that runs the Speaker Series. On January
28th, Lisa Yerges, the Director of Busi-
ness Services for Penn State Brandywine,
spoke to the students about becoming more
resource efficient. She cited current campus
efforts to use resources wisely, and encour-
aged students and staff to do the same. Ms.
Yerges also encouraged the 60 — 75 stu-
dents in attendance to join the Environmen-
tal Club at Penn State Brandywine.
Next up was the main speaker, Erik
Foley. Mr. Foley is the director of Penn
State’s new Campus Sustainability Of-
fice. His talk was titled “Riding the Green
Wave: A Fresh Look at Sustainable Liv-
ing.” Foley founded and directed the award
winning Renewable Energy Center at Saint
Francis University. This program contin-
ues to feature several state-wide projects
in community based renewable energy
development. A native of Montana, Foley
has traveled extensively from the Alaskan
bush, to Paraguay, back stateside to Seattle,
and now rural Pennsylvania. In addition
to his fourteen years of experience, Foley
has earned a M.B.A. as well as degrees in
sociology and environmental studies. He
has also served on the America Council
on Renewable Energy’s Communications
Committee.
Two more exciting speakers are
coming to Penn State Brandywine. On
Tuesday February 23rd, Yvette Brown
from Clean Markets will be exploring new
technologies and energy usage. Her talk
will cover the growth of these new tech-
nologies and the potential for usage in the
United States. Yvette Brown has more than
20 years of experience across a variety of
disciplines in the energy industry, rang-
ing from marketing and sales to capacity
planning and distribution. As executive
vice president of Clean Markets, she helps
corporate, university, and government
clients to optimize performance and imple-
ment innovations within the energy indus-
try, and also assists in developing effective
outreach programs that increase the mar-
ket penetration of clean technologies. On
Wednesday April 7th, Gary Saulson from
PNC Bank, will speak to the campus about
green buildings. PNC, which is a leader in
“green” initiatives, has the largest number
of green certified building s in the world. .
Students, faculty and staff are en-
couraged on February 23rd to join Yvette
Brown and Gary Saulson. Ms. Brown will
be in the Tomesko classroom building at
11:30 AM.in room 103, and Mr. Saulson
will be there at 7PM.
