Page 2 Eve The Lion’s Eye on: Campus The Spring Speaker Series By Kyrstin Camp - Lions Eye Staff Writer - ksc5136@psu.edu The Spring Speaker Series is a program that has been taking place at Penn State Brandywine. According to assistant professor of history, Julie Gallagher, the program is an attempt to “educate students and the community on the importance and possibilities surrounding energy usage and resource sustainability.” Professor Gal- ~ lagher is also a member of the committee that runs the Speaker Series. On January 28th, Lisa Yerges, the Director of Busi- ness Services for Penn State Brandywine, spoke to the students about becoming more resource efficient. She cited current campus efforts to use resources wisely, and encour- aged students and staff to do the same. Ms. Yerges also encouraged the 60 — 75 stu- dents in attendance to join the Environmen- tal Club at Penn State Brandywine. Next up was the main speaker, Erik Foley. Mr. Foley is the director of Penn State’s new Campus Sustainability Of- fice. His talk was titled “Riding the Green Wave: A Fresh Look at Sustainable Liv- ing.” Foley founded and directed the award winning Renewable Energy Center at Saint Francis University. This program contin- ues to feature several state-wide projects in community based renewable energy development. A native of Montana, Foley has traveled extensively from the Alaskan bush, to Paraguay, back stateside to Seattle, and now rural Pennsylvania. In addition to his fourteen years of experience, Foley has earned a M.B.A. as well as degrees in sociology and environmental studies. He has also served on the America Council on Renewable Energy’s Communications Committee. Two more exciting speakers are coming to Penn State Brandywine. On Tuesday February 23rd, Yvette Brown from Clean Markets will be exploring new technologies and energy usage. Her talk will cover the growth of these new tech- nologies and the potential for usage in the United States. Yvette Brown has more than 20 years of experience across a variety of disciplines in the energy industry, rang- ing from marketing and sales to capacity planning and distribution. As executive vice president of Clean Markets, she helps corporate, university, and government clients to optimize performance and imple- ment innovations within the energy indus- try, and also assists in developing effective outreach programs that increase the mar- ket penetration of clean technologies. On Wednesday April 7th, Gary Saulson from PNC Bank, will speak to the campus about green buildings. PNC, which is a leader in “green” initiatives, has the largest number of green certified building s in the world. . Students, faculty and staff are en- couraged on February 23rd to join Yvette Brown and Gary Saulson.
