The team simply could not string together wins in a fashion Penn State is used to. It is not as if the team wasn’t playing competi- tive basketball. They suffered sev- eral close defeats, including losses of 64-58 to PSU-York, 71-65 in the Rowan Christman Tournament, 73- 68 to Greater Allegheny, and 68-65 to PSU-Scranton. The lone bright spot for the ~ Brandywine guys was an 81-75 victory over PSU-Hazleton, which was but a single victory but so much more to the team. The guys have fought hard in every game, attempting to do their school proud but have come up short in every aspect of the game. _ At the time of printing, the team schedule showed them at 1-20, and 1-13 in the PSUAC. Led by head coach Stu Ross, the Lions can only hope to take this season and build upon, and look to at least double their victory total next season. ; The time will continue to learn and grow and hopefully next sea- son will not be nearly as depress- ing. | win for the Saints but ~ Colts and become Saints Win Super Bowl XLIV By Steven Scoleri - Lion's Eye Staff Writer sds5084@psu.edu It was a Super Bowl that displayed two of the best quarterbacks in the game going head to head in an epic battle. The New Orleans Saints were the feel good team of the NFL and the only thing that was stopping them from bringing a championship back to the city of New Orleans was Peyton Manning and the | Indianapolis Colts. It was not an easy they were able to pull out the victory 31-17 over the Indianapolis champions of Super- Bowl XLIV. Hurricane Katrina hit the New Orleans area August 28, 2005 and the Saints brought the city together and gave them hope through the treacherous time. The Saints were more than a team to the city of New Orleans. They were a way of life and gave the city a feeling of hope to take their minds off the city being destroyed by Hur- ricane Katrina. The Saints finished the regular sea- son with a record of 13-3 winning their first 13 games of the season. NFL fans could tell this team, led by quarterback ® /- Aap Drew Brees was awarded - MVP of Super Bowl XLIV (Photo courtesy of sports. yahoo. com) Orleans win a cham- and captain Drew Brees, was for real. Every player worked hard all season and the final result was bringing the city of New Orleans its first Vince Lombardi trophy. SuperBowl XLIV started out with the Indianapolis Colts jumping out to an early 10-0 lead. Drew Brees and the pa Saints offense started out slowly and could not get much clicking through the first half. The Saints when into - halftime down 10-6. The second half is when the Saints came marching. With the Saints leading 24-17 in the fourth quarter, it was Peyton Manning’s time to drive the Colts down the field to tie the game. Uncharacteristic of Pey- ton Manning, he throws an interception to Tracy Porter who takes it back 74 yards for the touchdown to seal the game and give the city of New Orleans its first ever championship. It was a nice sight to see the city of New HE ~ pionship after all of the hardships the people had to over- come with Hurricane Katrina. The fans can now march down Bourbon Street as Super Bowl XLIV Champions. Believe it or Not: Spring Training is Here Toronto, being drafted in 1995 by the Blue Jays, and | has yet to pitch in the playoffs. Joining the power- house Phillies his career has never looked brighter. By David Hoffer - Lions Eye Staff Writer - deh5081 @psu.edu After weathering three blizzards, in what is now known as the snowiest winter in Philadelphia’s his- tory, it may be a good time to remind ourselves that Phillies’ baseball is fast approaching. The cracking of bats and sight of grass are just mere weeks away. With the Eagles embarrassing end, the Flyers un- expected struggles and the Sixers still rebuilding, it might be a good time to remember our Phillies will again be defending the National League champion- ship and are heavy favorites to win the NL East for a 4 straight year, the National League for a 3 straight year and World Series for the third time in the fran- chises history. Giving hope to another parade down South Broad Street is the returning core: Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth, Shane Victorino, Raul Ibanez and Carlos Ruiz. Between them they have 12 all-star game appearances, 2 NL MVPs and 5 gold gloves. They make up one of the most threatening lineups in Phillies history, and the current MLB. How do you possibly improve this lineup: by bringing in a solid all-star and a 2x gol glove winner in Placido Polanco. Polanco, 34, will begin his second tour of duty with the Phillies after being traded after 3 seasons in 2005 to the Detroit Tigers. In Detroit, Polanco enjoyed much success, hitting over .300, winning 2 Gold Gloves, a Silver Slugger Award and was named 2006 ALCS MVP as the Tigers played in their first World Series since 1984. “I always wanted to be here, I never wanted to leave,” spoke Polanco. Coming back to Philadel- phia, Polanco will be moved to third base from second where he has played most of his career. Polanco has stated he doesn’t see a problem with that as he has played third i in college and early in his MLB career. As if Polanco wasn’t enough, the Phillies are entering the new decade with another terrific acqui- sition, arguably the biggest signing this offseason as well as Phillies history— Roy Halladay. Halladay, 32, the Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners that saw the departure of fan favorite Cliff Lee. Halladay, much like Lee, is coming to the Phillies a proven ace. In his past 8 seasons he has 130 wins, 6 all-star selections and one Cy Young Award for his 2003 season. Much like Polanco, Halladay expressed his desire to play in Philly. “This is where we wanted to be,” said Halladay. “It was an easy decision for me. Once the opportu- nity came up for me to be part of this, it was some- thing I couldn’t pass up.” How could he? He has spent his entire career in Halladay is joining a Phillies rotation that is still ~ very solid. Cole Hamels will be looking for re- demption after a disappointing2009 campaign. Joe Blanton, who recently signed 3 year contract exten- sion, will also look to have another solid season as a Phillie. Rounding out the rotation will be JA Happ, who had a fine rookie season, the ageless wonder Ja- mie Moyer, who is returning after an injury plagued 2009 season and Kyle Kendrick, who is looking to earn a full time roster spot. Halladay and Hamels are expected to top the rotation with Blanton and Happ pitching out of the three and four spot respectively. Moyer and Ken- drick with duel for the fifth spot, with the victor rounding out the rotation while the other may pos- was acquired back in December in a trade involving sibly be placed fn thie bullpen. With a lineup that has never looked better and ~ a rotation that has a killer 1-2 punch, we can look ahead to the boys of summer with the upmost opti- mism and excitement. That is, if we ever escape our ferocious winter.
