But if you have any questions contact Averil Sweeney at afs5059@psu.edu AIDS Awareness at Penn ~ State Brandywine By Angela Potter - Lion's Eye Staff Writer - alp5372@psu.edu On Monday, November 30th, Brad Lowery came to Penn State Brandywine to spread awareness about HIV and AIDS. Although Lowery is also a standup comedian, his message addressed a very serious global issue. He revealed the staggering fact that, “In the United States alone, there is an estimated 1,000,000 people living with HIV.” Lowery launched his campaign with the goal to get 1,000,000 people tested for HIV. The film “No One Will Ever Know” was produced by Lowery himself and follows the struggle of two women after a fateful night of promiscuity. Unpro- tected sex is the most common way to transmit the HIV virus. HIV is the acronym for “Human Immunodeficiency Virus.” It is a virus that attacks the immune system and lowers the white blood cells, or what is called the T cell count in the body. When the number of T cells reaches 14% or below, the victim becomes diagnosed with AIDS, or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Lowery told his audience, “Statistically, worldwide 22,000,000 people have died from Aids; 42 million people are living with the HIV and AIDS virus.” He went on to explain, “A large percent of that are among young people between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five.” Lowery encourages young people to get tested for the HIV virus in order to raise awareness and prevent the spread of this deadly disease. Their mission: to get out of college, start a new life, and boldly go out into the real world. Many Brandywine students will end their college careers after graduating on December 18th and move out into the real world and the tough economy. It is a time for congratulations and mothers’ tears. | wonder what these bright young men and women think about their ever-nearing transition to the real world (not the MTYV show). I wonder; are they excited to be full- fledged adults? Are they nervous about the sketchy economy? I wonder if I could maybe find a few graduating seniors and ask them? The first thing that comes to mind when talk of graduation fills the air is the excitement. I mean, it’s a big deal. When I sat down with some about-to-be- THE WATERCOOLER Fun Q&A with PSU Brandywine Faculty & Staff With Kionna Lipscomb - Lions Eye Entertainment Editor kz1122@psu.edu Twana Walker, Advising and Career Services, Academic Advisor IPod or CD artist on repeat: Maxwell’s newest CD - “BLACKsummers'night,” because I am a big fan of neo-soul R&B. He’s been on an 8-year hiatus, so I was really anticipating his new album. Restaurant of the hour: Bonefish Grill located in Newtown Square, PA. I love their pasta dish “Diablo Shrimp Fettuccini”. One thing he/she knows for sure: When life gives you lemon make lemonade. Then life would go so much smoother. Zen destination: I always wanted to go to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Biggest Pet peeve: When people question my intelligence and try to - belittle me. If you could make one improvement to our government, what would it be? Put more money into public services jobs (i.e. policemen and fire- men) and put a cap on entertainment (i.e. rappers and basketball figures) salaries. Best characteristic: I have a really large and giving heart. I am willing to give the shirt off my back. What’s the best advice you can give a student? Always do your best in school. Make sure you choose a career that’s best fitting for you and not what someone else wants you to do. If you weren’t in the advising/career services office, what could you see yourself doing instead? I would be a professor. I would either teach Human resources or business related courses. graduates, they were all giddy. Was it graduation just around the corner, or was it really just the-most wonderful time of the year that had them pepped up? According to Adrienne Showalter, an English major, “Graduation comes first... This has been a busy, tough semester so graduation is my reward for hard work.” But behind the excitement lurks finding a job. Are these seniors worried about being fresh fish in the troubled economy? One of the fishies, Kionna Lipscomb, a corporate communications major, told me she was nervous. “I’m fascinated with fashion and editing. It’s a competitive field, but I’m ready.” On the flipside, Adrienne isn’t too worried. She said, “Well, I do have a job in line for right after graduation. I also hope to attend graduate school, so I am attempting to forget about the economy at this very moment.” The positive attitudes abound. Before wrapping up the conversation, I thought I’d be a little self-indulgent and squeeze some advice out of the seniors. Lucky for you Ill share their secrets. Kionna let slip her three Ds for success, “You have to be driven, dedicated, and determined to succeed. Nothing comes to you, you have to go get it. Adrienne said, “Try not to procrastinate! Time management makes life easier.” And my advice to the graduates: one word... plastics.
