Page 12 The Lion’s Eye on Sports December 9, 2009 The start to the year has been tough for the Penn State Brandywine Lady Li- ons basketball team, as they opened with three consecu- tive losses. All the games have been tough losses, but they did display a great deal of effort from the team. Although it may be a tough start to the year, the girls will not go down with- out a fight. Starting point guard Shari Harper has led the team. She is a returning starter and a dominant play- er for the team. Another player who has contributed is Bobbi Caprice. Caprice has played very well and very consistently to start out the year. The Lady Lions will look to Harper and Caprice to continue their strong, start to the season and carry the team but they will need help around them and will look to other players to step up and evolve as the season continues to play out. . ‘Penn State Brandywine Athletics Getting on Track: PSU Brandywine Women’s Basketball By Chris McSweeney Lions Eye Staff Writer cem50532@psu.edu The girls have over 20 . games left on their season schedule and plenty of op- portunities to make up for those three losses. The team would love as much support as they could get, so come out and sup- port your fellow students. As the season progress- es the girls will continue to play hard and fight to turn their season around. The team will grow and bond as teammates and surely win games for our school. ~ Itis important that we get out and support our girls in their endeavors. The next few home games are on December 9th and 12th. These are four games in which you can catch the girls play before we break for the holiday season. The women’s basket- ball team is important to Penn State Brandywine and they have a very promising team. Start of the PSU Brandywine Men’s Basketball Season is Underway By Karlo Radolovic Lions Eye Staff Writer kar5165@psu.edu The Penn State Brandywine men’s ‘basketball team has a promising season ahead, despite losing in their season opener against Rosemont College on No- vember 19th, Brandywine did have some bright spots in the game. In the first half of the game Penn State held Rosemont to only a 36% shooting percentage. Even though they played great defense, Brandywine went into half time trailing by 12 points. The second half started off bad for the Lions and that’s how it ended as well. Rosemont defeated Brandywine with a final score of 75-40. Losing by 35 points is something that they want to forget as they move on with their season. Two players did stand out for the Li- ons in their first game. Freshman forward Learon Pray finished the game with 12° points and TJ Hazinsky had 6 rebounds. The team’s upcoming schedule looks to be very challenging, but they have a great coach and a very promising team. Look for a great season out the Penn State Brandywine Men’s Basketball team. Continuing Success: PSU Brandywine Hockey in the Midst of a Promising | Season By Dave Zelinski Lions Eye Staff Writer dmz5009@psu.edu The Penn State Brandywine ice hockey team is coming off of a stellar month of November with six wins and one loss. He’s Back: Allen Iverson Returns to the Philadelphia 76ers By Justin Park - Lions Eye Sports Editor - jrp5321 @psu.edu In case you didn’t hear, Allen Iverson is back in Philadelphia. The injured and struggling 76ers signed the 34 year-old point guard on December 2nd. The team, currently in a nine game losing streak, signed “The Answer” hoping he will provide the spark the Sixers need to succeed, along with some talented veteran experience. He signed with Memphis over the offseason under the impression that he would be a starter, but when he was forced to come off of the bench, he left the team. Iverson was subsequently waived, citing “personal issues”, and was free to be signed by any team in the league. When Iverson cleared waivers, he hit rock bot- tom and his career was all but over. No team in the league felt they needed him. As the days passed with no phone calls, Iverson prepared to retire. However numerous players around the league showed support for Iverson and even his former coach, Larry Brown, believed that the Sixers should sign him. Then Iverson finally caught a break — well, a fracture anyway. In a game against the Washington Wizards, the Sixers starting point guard, Louis Wil- liams fractured his jaw and was told he would miss up to eight weeks. . So the team began to speak with the former 76er and finally worked out a one year, non- guaranteed contract. : By signing Iverson, the Sixers get a veteran point guard who can lead a team to an increased offensive output. Hopefully this will push the 76ers to more victories as the team gels. As for Iverson himself, he is just grateful for the opportunity to play again. "The last couple years have been hell. All I want to do is play basketball and help the guys I play with,” Iverson said in his tear-filled press confer- ence. : : AIL was also happy to be reunited with the city and fans that have supported him for over a decade. “The relationships I have with these fans are like no other in sports. I have a love for them and they love me and it’s evident. When I had the opportunity to come back here I couldn’t turn it down,” Iverson said. : The fans obviously feel the same way and support the move, for they sold out Iverson’s first game back with the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday, December 7th against the Denver Nuggets. Iverson was selected to start in the game. :
