What would happen if Elvis Cos- tello sang lead vocals in the Beach Boy’s opus Pet Sounds? Well, thanks to newly formed band Girls, we finally have that answer. The driving force behind the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, found himself at odds with serious hearing loss when he was a child and so he was at a disadvantage from the start of his musical career. But Christopher Owens, the Elvis Costello sound-alike and lead singer of Girls, might just have a leg up in the trials and tribulations area of musical success. Christopher Owens was born into the Children of God cult. His older brother died due to the cult’s lack of belief in medical attention. Owen’s father left him and his mother alone with a cult that began to force Owen’s mother to prostitute herself in order to gain new converts. Owens fled from the group and lived in the gutters of Texas for a lengthy time until a local millionare picked him up and helped him get his musical career started. Owens moved to San Francisco and met Chet “JR” White, and the Photo courtesy of amazon.com two formed Girls and recorded Album under the influence of an excessive amount of drugs. What makes Girls so groundbreaking is the sincerity of the music. There is no doubt in my mind that Owens means every word he sings (or croons, rather). His lyrics are very poppy and most of them focus on relationships and heart- break, but the sadness behind his wavery voice is real. It almost seems as if he is struggling to get through the song because of this imminent wave of depression. In “Hellhole Ratrace” he sings, “I’m sick and tired of the way that I feel. I’m always dreaming and it’s never for real.” It is the anthem of a broken man. It seems as if a certain person is being targeted in Album taking into account two of the song titles are “Laura” and “Lauren Marie,” the earliest of the two featuring lyrics that sound both light and dark: “Reach out and touch me, I’m right here. And I don’t want to fight any- more. I really want to be your friend forever. Friend until the end of it all.” Album needs to be listened to over and over again in order to grasp every nuance of the musical genius of which you have made yourself a consumer. Album also tends to transcend genres, jumping from power pop (“Lust for Life”) to acoustic (“God Damned”) to distinct traces of noise rock (“Morning Light”) all coalescing into what could be the most important album of 2009. Just remember, you heard it here first. Two times is a charm, or at least that’s true for Stepha- nie Pratt. Stephanie, Spencer’s little sister and The Hills reality star, had another run‘in with the law. According to Star Maga- zine, Stephanie was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in Hollywood and charged with a misdemeanor. The socialite was released on $5,000 bail. Just before the alleged inci- dent, Stephanie was last seen at Holly Montag’s, sister of Heidi, birthday party at an L.A night- club. Stephanie’s first incident occurred in 2006, when she was arrested for shoplifting at a Nei- man Marcus in Hawaii. Get your fix. Drama & Kate Plus 8 may be coming to an end soon.
