No, this is a review of a movie about a story about love. Di- rected by Marc Webb and written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, (500) Days of Summer is the story of Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a greeting card writer in some unnamed city, who meets Summer Finn, the new administrative assistant at his office and quickly falls in love with her. The problem is that Summer (Zooey Deschanel) does not believe in love and believes instead that “real life will always get in the way.” The story is purposely out of order chronologically and details the rise and fall of their relationship. Tom does his best to break down while Summer pushes further and further away from Tom. The difference between (500) Days of Summer and other films that could be grouped into this genre, the unconventional love story, is the incredible job the movie does of evoking the emotion that you are meant to feel at different points throughout the movie. It is real in a way that does not seem to be explored as much as it should be in a lot of ways. The Story is very strong and the director takes it in some very dynamic directions (see: split-screen scene). Whether you relate to him or not, you can really feel the deterioration in Tom as he soon realizes that the girl of his dreams is slowly bregking his heart. Zooey Deschanel fits in so easily as the girl you wish you could hate if it were not for her subtle beauty and impeccable music taste. The soundtrack is exceptional; easily it is the best I’ve heard in a long time (Take that, Nick and Norah’s Never-ending Sucklist!).
