Brandywine Student Wins Honorable Mention in Edith Garlow Poetry Contest By Jennifer Santangelo Lions Eye Staff Writer jms1084@psu.edu Andrew Dombalagian, a junior at Penn State Brandywine, re- cently won an honorable mention for the annual Edith Garlow Memorial Poetry Contest. Andrew’s poem titled “Charon” was chosen from numer- ous entries as one of the best. When asked about his inspiration for this work he states “The inspiration came to me about a year or two ago when I'was thinking about the Persephone myth. I formulated my own interpre- tation of the story. Constantly being ferried back and forth between her mother and husband, I considered what if she were to confide in Charon, whose job it was to take her to and from the Underworld. The premise of my poem is what if, caught between Hades and Ceres, some sort of relationship were to blossom between Persephone and Charon.” This was Andrew’s second year participating in the contest. Andrew also is one of the editor’s for Penn State Brandywine’s literary magazine Penn In Hand. Andrew spent two years at Saint Joseph’s Uni- versity where he also worked for their literary magazine The Crimson and Grey. Andrew has also contributed short stories, poems and even a little photography. Andrew says “Creating vivid images and telling interesting stories is my passion.” We hope he continues. Congratulations Andrew!
