Brandywine Hockey Rough Outing at Nationals By Sean Dalton Lion's Eye Staff Writer-spd5035@psu.edu It is officially past the first week of March, which means one thing. The Men’s Division III Nationals for ice hockey is over, and a new champion has been crowned. Over spring break our very own men’s ice hockey team traveled north to Rochester, New York to compete in Nationals. It was a highly anticipated event for the men’s ice hockey team and everyone involved in the festivities. It’s not every day that you see a team, with almost 85% of the players on the roster being freshmen, competing for a title such as National Champions of a division. Con- gratulations are surely in order for both the players and the coaching staff. Over the course of four days, Penn State Brandywine played a total of four games. The games were nothing less than hard fought. The first game they played was against Northern Arizona where they fell short, 5-1. The next three games were ‘played against Central Florida, Georgia Tech, and Colo- rado. Those three games were all lost by only goal. They had great help from Mike Gumina, Anthony Carnesi, and Tyler Wiltrout. To add to all of this Penn State Brandy- wine, had phenomenal goaltending as usual by both Bob Stewart and Dave Zelinski. Overall, the players said they wouldn’t trade this experience for anything. A great time seemed to have been had by all the players and coaches. The players say, they will continue on workout routines as usual, and proceed to get on the ice as much as possible during the course of the off season. From all of us here at Penn State Brandywine, congratulations for all that the “team has accomplished this season, and we look forward to seeing more next winter! Brandywine Baseball IS BACK! By Thomas A. McGlinchey Lion's Eye Sports Editor-tam5160@psu.edu The Penn State Brandywine baseball Lions are back for the spring season. The team went 11-1 during the. fall sea- son, and is practically the same team with a few new faces. The Lions finally played their first games at home after being rained out for the first few games. They seemed to be anxious to start the season off right. The team that stood in their way was the Penn State Hazleton team. The first game was at 1 PM. The team was excited to finally start their season after sitting around for 2 weeks. The game was an annihilation of Hazleton. The Brandywine Lions took advantage of the power that the team had. Keith “Beef” Shilcock-Elliot showed his power knocking multiple at bats deep into center field. The pitching was not bad either. The pitcher for Brandywine, Steve DeCecco, is a freshman from Marple Newtown High(#8). He mowed down the Hazleton team, and was one reason that the team was the winner of their first game. Great fielding by catcher Teddy Seiler, sophomore from Marple Newton High (#3), and the rest of the team on the field was the other reason that the team won the game and was able to destroy the Hazleton team. The final of game 1 was 9-0, in favor of the Brandywine. The second game was closer but the Brandywine team was the victor. The team played well in the field, and with more power hitting from Shilcock-Elliot. The headline story of the second game was the astounding pitching from newcomer to the team, Corey Hepfer (#18), freshman from Springfield High. ; He was plowing down the Hazleton lineup, only giving up two hits in 7 innings. The final of game 2 was 3-0. Way to start the season Brandywine Baseball Lions. Keep it up and go for that Championship. Everyone at Penn State Brandywine knows you can do it. The Lion’s Eye : E— | = SR | = April 15, 2009 NITtany Lions are NIT CHAMPS! By Thomas A. McGlinchey Lion's Eye Sports Editor-tam5160@psu.edu The NIT logo - Photo courtesy http//frmarkdwhite files. wordpress. com/2009/03/nit-logo-328.jpg) The Penn State University Nittany Lions were in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) while everyone was waiting for the NCAA National Champion. Many analysts were surprised that the Nittany Lions were not in the running for the National Championship because they were able to win the-majority of their games during the season. The Lions were able to amaze most of the people in New York City at Madison Square Garden, even though they were seeded number 2 in the NIT. - The first test for the Lions was against, the “Cinderella” of the NCAA Tournament a few years ago, George Mason at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College. The Lions were domi- nated for the final few seconds, but were able to come from behind and win the game. The final -was 77-73 in overtime. The leaders for the Lions were Talor Battle who finished the game with 24 points. Battle was the difference maker in the overtime, scoring 8 of his 24 in the extra frame. The second game was against Rhode Island. The Lions were not able to hit a basket in the final 9 minutes of regulation, but they had a comfortable lead, that the game was in hand. With that 9 minute drought, the Rhode Island Rams were able to cut the deficit to 6 with only 2 min- utes left. The Lions were able to win the game by 11 points, 73-62, with help from Stan Pringle. Pringle had 19 points in the game, and led all Penn State scorers. Andrew Jones 111 helped with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The third game of the tourna- ment was against back to back champions from a few years ago, the Gators from Florida. The Lions dominated the final score by winning the game against the 2-time champs with a 71-62 win. The leading scorer for the Lions was Jamelle Cornley, who had a double. The Nittany Lions had 12 rebounds to go with his 23 points, and he led all scorers from both teams with that 23 point performance. Next up for the Lions was the Notre Dame Irish. : With only two games left to cap the Lions NIT- championship, the Lions rolled through the Big Apple, to do it. The first opponent for the Lions was the Irish from South Bend. The Notre Dame team was on a roll until the game against the Lions, where the Lions were able to dominate the Irish into submission. The Lions won this game by 67-59. The Lions were led again by Battle, who scored 17 points and Jones, who had 15 rebounds in the game. The Lions were able to make a run for the NIT National Championship from this win, but they had a tough opponent in Baylor. The NIT National Championship game was the closest game that the Lions faced in the tournament. The Baylor Bears led at the half by 4, 29-25. The Bears collapsed after that half. The Lions went on a run to tie the game at 37, and finally take the lead in the early part of the second half. The half was dominated by Dan Morrissey, who scored two key 3 pointers to give the Lions the lead for good. He would later leave the game after busting his nose diving for a ball. The leader of this Nittany Lion team, Talor Battle put the ex- clamation point on the tournament with a running jumper for two points. The Lions rolled to a 69-63 win and the NIT Championship.
