For nearly two decades, an Irish comedian with an outlandish crop of red hair, his celebrated pom- padour, has graced screens all over the nation from New York, but all that is in the midst of changing. Conan O’Brien has served as a 21st century jester for the jaded kings and queens watching from their couches at home, remote in hand ready to wave their wand and see what the next channel has to offer. The thing is, most remotes remain motionless, because this Harvard graduate and former writer for The Simpsons and SNL is an expert on one thing: late night, innapropri- ate humor. : Conan, the man who towers over everyone at Rockefeller Center — metaphorically and physically (he’s a very tall guy), is abondoning his digs in the Big Apple and trying his luck out on the opposite coast. The Irish Catholic man native to the Northeast is taking over Jay Leno’s role as host of the Tonight Show and so the man with the elongated chin and sparkling grey hair can retire to his collection of automobiles. : Can a pompadour possibly compete with a chin? Jay Leno has been the man pdrents watch while waiting for their curfew-breaking hoodlum kids to come home, preparing a lecture and punishment while lending half their attention to Leno battling his lisp to bark out hollow jokes that may or may not elicit a chuckle from his lackadaisical viewers. Conan, on the other hand, uses his TV show not to gain popularity or fund his ever- growing collection of cars, but rather just to amuse himself and whoever may find his degradation and childish antics amusing. He has admitted time and time again that most of his “sketches” and other stunts are for his own pleasure, and muses aloud when NBC will take the show away from him for wasting the budget. Well, the show has been taken away, but replaced by a new time slot, title, and location. Conan’s audience is left to wonder what will become of the acts that stole our heart, from Fed-Ex Pope and Preparation-H Man to Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and the Masturbating Bear. These acts, along with others, are expected to me scratched off the big board and replaced with more “mainstream friendly” acts. The earlier time slot invites more demographics to tune in and see what the gnagly host has to offer, and O’Brian will have to be careful not to tread on the toes of his new higher-ups. Will he still cling to the classics approved by the masses, such as Celebrity Survey and If They Mated? Speculation is fruitless, we may just have to have faith in the man that has taken 16 years to perfect the string dance. And if you are unfortunate enough not to have an inkling as to what the string dance is, tune in during June, where viewers can watch Conan show off his nimble dance moves during his monologue while he pulls his hips around on an invisible string. Will LA change the pale, self-deprecating host that many have come to know and admire? Will he still feel compelled to take random trips to Ireland and Fin- land just to have a few comical clips for his show? Will he finally feel the need to mature and act like an adult with a TV show, rather than a child in a playground of cameras and lights? Let’s hope this Irish man is the next ~~ pallor East Coast native.
