The seniors on the teams were honored before the games and were slated to play the entire game, if able. Seniors Katie Martin and Deanna Gineitis lead the team in experience this season with an above .500 record. The team was able to send their teammates home with a sense of accomplishment as they were able to win the final regular season home game. Deanna Gineitis was able to play the whole game except for the final 2 minutes and change. The reason the coach decided to take her out is not because of an injury, but because she had paid her dues. As for Katie, from what was reported, she had blown out her knee in a previous game was not able to play. They did not need her though, the team was able to dominant the first half of the game. The Penn State Brandywine Lady Lions were able to keep their opponent, Penn State Hazleton, uncomfortable in the first half and were able to jump out to an early lead, 28-10. The half score was 42-22. The second half was more of the same, as the Brandywine Lions were able to widen their lead. The final was 88-44. Deanna and Katie agreed that the games over their years on campus have had their ups and downs. Deanna considers Katie her sister, and Katie agrees that Deanna is like a sis- tertoher also. Deanna states, “I got a sister out of the game.” Both Katie and Deanna said that what they would want their teammates to know what to take from the experiences in PSU basketball, and that is the leadership and teamwork. Deanna said, “Stay together as a “fam- ily”.” Katie said of the subject, “Always keep your head(s) up. Stick together as a team.” She said that she was going to take the togetherness they had on the court into her future adventure. Deanna said that she learned leadership and teamwork from her experiences. Mohammad Mahgoub and the Men’s team weré less fortunate. Moham- mad was like Katie in that he had an injury and was not able to play in his final home game of his college career. The Men’s team were able to pull out an early lead to finish the half, 33-30, without their senior. In the second half the team fell apart like it has all season long. They let the small lead slip away in the opening min- utes of the half, but clawed their way back into the fight with a decent scoring run. Many in attendance saw the Brandywine Men’s team chip away at the deficit and jock for the lead from the 6:30 mark of the half until the end. The final 1:30 was where the Hazleton men were able to wear down the Bran- dywine men and pull out a win. The final score of this game was 74-65. Mahgoub was seen throwing the tape that was on his fingers from the injury “on the basketball court after the game, and he seemed disgraced with the final result. He also seemed disgraced with not being able to help his teammates to close a win. The season was not what many expected it to be, but like all other teams that finish on the losing end, there is always next year The Lion’s Eye : on February 27, 2009 Sports Basketball seniors and captains Katie Martin and Deanna Gineitis. McGlinchey Lions Eye Sports Editor- tam5160@psu The Penn State Brandywine’s Lady Lions Basketball team finished their home season with a playoff game at home on February 20, 2009. The game was held at 7 PM on this night and it was the last time that Captain Katie Mar- tin and “sister” Deanna Gineitis would be home court for their Penn State careers. Deanna hit a milestone while away playing a game ‘against Penn - State Fayette. Deanna scored her 1,000 point of her college career. The Li- on’s Eye Sports would like to congratulate Deanna on this monumental feat. The game was entertaining because through the 1st half the Lady Lions were not able to blow out the York Lions, like they had done on Senior Day (reference Basketball Lions end season in Fashions). In the early-going, the Brandywine Lions seemed to be a little jittery Brandywine Hockey Lions - Bound for NATIONAL By Sean Dalton Lion's Eye Staff Writer - spd5035@psu.edu As spring draws nearer one thing comes to mind for some athletes. One thing that comes to mind is Nationals. The Nationals are where the top ranked teams in the country come to play in these games for the bragging right that is National Champions. This year Rochester , New York is home to the 2009 National Champion, for Men’s Division III Ice Hockey Tournament. Why all the talk about Nationals? Because, this year the Penn State Brandywine Men’s Ice Hockey Team have been selected to com- pete in The National Championships in Rochester, New York. This is surely good news for the Men’s hockey team, for it will be their first time competing in these games in four years. A couple of players on the team seem nothing short of thrilled to be playing in these games. It should be noted, that none of the players have ever been to a Nation- als Tournament. However, the team seems very prepared for the upcoming games. The team surely had an impressive start to the first half of the season end- ing on a record of 19-5. The second half of the season started off with five huge wins for the team, and their only loss in the second half of the season was when they fell short to Monmouth. That’s extremely impressive if you ask any sports writer. The Penn State Brandywine Men’s Ice Hockey Team finished off the regular season with a record of 32-4. They also ranked fourth in the division for National standings. Ev- eryone on the team contributed judging on stats alone. With great goaltending from Bobby Stewart who had a save percentage of .902, and great offense from players such as Mike Gu- = Penn State Brandywine Baseball Schedule 3/6-3/12 Spring Training in Cocoa Beach, FL 3/15 vs. Wilkes University @ Brandywine @ 1 PM 3/28 @ PSU Abington @ 12 noon 4/4 vs. PSU Hazleton @ 1 PM 4/6 @ Lincoln University @ 3 PM mina, Pat McCunney, Anthony Carnesi, and Mat- thew Green. Overall the team shows no signs of slowing down at all. The team will be competing in Nationals from March 4th- March 7th, 2009. Good luck from everyone here at Penn State Brandywine! and not able to get good looks at the basket. The team was forcing shots that were not the best shots on the court. Brandywine fell into foul trouble and was not playing their usual defense early but they were able to recover and tie the game at 15 with 9 minutes left in the half. Compared to the Senior Day blow-out, this game seemed low on scoring. By the final few minutes, the Brandywine Li- ons were able to play their game and make York uncomfortable. One funny in- cident that happened in the 1st half was that the York coach received a technical foul for fighting with the officials. The half score was Brandywine 38- York 27. During the game, Katie Martin did not seem to want to miss this game, in particular, for anything, and played a tough game. She shot the lights out from beyond the arch (3 pointers). To start the second half, Brandywine came out of the gate shooting well, scoring 7 points within the first 2 minutes of the game. The team also seemed to be playing aggressive defense. Shari Harper, a freshman from _ in her 1st playoff game as a college student, forced the issue in the 1st half with full court presses and continued it into the second half. The 2nd half was back and forth baskets, and the Brandywine Lions seemed to be shut down for the majority of it, but they had a big enough lead that they were fine. The team pushed the de- fense into overdrive in the final minutes of the game. The final score of the game was Brandywine 70- York 60. Penn State Brandywine moves onto University Park to play another game in a win or go home game on Monday February 23, 2009. Shari Harper described her first playoff game as “tough.” Deanna and Katie both said that this game was “amazing!” She described Coach Larry Johnson as “a dad.” She also wanted to say thank you to him for all that he has done for her in his one year as an assist-coach and three years as her head coach. She was glad to finish the season at home on a good note (with the win) : and was anxious for this game. Deanna saw that the team finally came together down the stretch. Katie said that she would like to thank coach for the 4 years that she has been on the squad. She has learned a lot and she appreci- ated what he did for her. Finally, she wants to wish him the best of luck in his future teams. NN » ”
