Finally, the movie based on the first novel was re- leased on November 21st, 2008 and it was quite a memo- rable event. I never understood when someone used the phrase “it was nowhere near as good as the book,” but after reading a book series like this one and then seeing the movie, I totally get that saying now. The movie was good for someone that has never read the books and was planning on seeing some random movie in the theatre. They may have thought, good love story, nice looking cast, I liked it. For people that have read the books, it was like a little community that want- ed to see a novel being brought to life. At the premiere there was cheering, laughing, ooh’s and ahh’s, same as it is with every Harry Potter movie premiere. I even made the Fox News broadcast the next morning declaring how awesome I thought it was. : When the movie first began it didn’t feel real to me. It didn’t feel like a movie, but pieces of the book on a screen, which in a way is good, though I felt that they tried too hard with some of it. As soon as the Cul- lens made their entrance onto the screen that all changed. Everyone was cheering and swooning over Robert Pat- tison’s performance as Edward Cullen, the brooding do- gooder vampire that doesn’t drink human blood. Some parts were very humorous for the audience to enjoy, like the biology scene where we see a tortured Edward trying not to rip Bella’s throat out because her blood smells so appetizing to him and anyone who read the first chap- ter of Midnight Sun on Stephanie Myers website, (which may or may not still be there now) would know what was going through Edward’s mind in that scene. Other quirky things were a very fun part of the movie, such as Jasper looking like he was.in pain, and Rosalie being a cold- hearted you know what. I have to say, aside from loving the Edward and Bella love-story, I absolutely adored Al- ice almost as much as I did in the novel. She wasn’t in the movie for very long, but the scenes she was in, she was dead on. I feel that most of the actors picked to play the characters were how I pictured them, aside from Jacob Black, his dad Billy and Bella’s father, but most of the actors they picked were very believable to play the char- acters the readers loved. All the famous quotes that we know and loved from the book were in there, such as “And so the lion fell in love with the lamb.”, “What a stupid lamb. What a sick, masochistic lion.” There were scenes that made - my heart melt, like when Edward says to Bella in the res- taurant “I don’t have the strength to stay away from you anymore.” Robert Pattison’s face could make a girl cry in that scene. The level of sexual tension in the movie was a definite plus and was so akin to the feel of the book. I have a friend of mine who hated the Twilight craze and never read the books but saw the movie with her friends and said the sexual tension made the whole movie for her. That and Jacob. (She fell in love with him, go figure). The one scene I really loved was when the Cullens and Bella played baseball. The song that played in the background was Muse’s “Supermassive Black Hole,” which I love, and I thought was a nice touch since Stephanie Myers adores the band and dedicated Breaking Dawn to the in December 10, 2008 O nh "Entertainment Photo courtesy of Summit Entertainment spiration they gace her while she was writing the series. The editing in that scene was very well done; in fact, the ‘whole movie was very well edited really. It was really poetic the way the editors manifested the scene at the end when Edward is sucking the venom out of Bella’s veins and she is seeing her life flash before her eyes. The sound- track was great, as well as all the costumes and sets. Overall 1 would give the movie three stars. It could never top the book, but it is something I think all of the fans will cherish because it is another form of art dedicated to their beloved novel. I look forward to the next movie when Kristin Stewart has to play a depressed Bella through most of New Moon and because Jacob will be introduced as more of a central character in Bella’s life. S El.
