However, a farewell cannot be made without a few words about the teams that made this season exciting and memorable. The soccer team was filled with new blood, a new coach, David Carvalho, and new freshman. Even though the team was not suc- cessful in the win column, the team learned many things from this experience. First, freshman can take away a sense of what college soccer is all ~~ about. They can reminisce about high school soc- cer, and their first season of college soccer, as well as a hope for next season. The rest of the team can say that they had fun with the team this season. A new coach can be difficult to adapt to and the soc- cer team seemed to adapt to the new style of play very well as the season continued. The volleyball team was a new experi- ence for some of its players. One such player is Megan Johnson, who played volleyball for the first time this past season. Then there are players like Melanie Tyson, who come to the team with a full background in the sport. With a new direc- tion, from Coach Len Lomas, the team had to find a common goal and they seemed to find it quick. Some of the freshman were able to bond with the upper classman from the get-go and some needed a little help from other players, but there was a common goal for all the players - win, win, win. The team was electric in their first game at home as they were able to pull a win out from Penn State - Abington on the tragic day of September 11. They were able to roll from there and command their own destiny. Heading into the final few games of the season, Mina Shaffert and Allison Rankin wanted to finish their careers on a good note in front of their friends and family. The final home game of the season was the last game before the playoffs, and the Volley Lions were able to win for their departing friends. Even though, the Volley Lions were not able to finish the season in style with a championship, they sure seemed to have fun doing it, ending the season with a record of 11-10. The Penn State Brandywine tennis team was poised to have a spectacular season. Under the direction of Becca Bergwall, the Tennis Lions were able to scrounge together many wins and have fun doing it. Newcomers Sean Hickey and Cydney Goldman and seasoned veterans Arsene de Conde and Mark Angley were some of the team members this year. The team seems ready for next season with a few seniors graduating and a few players leaving to attend University Park, but Coach Bergwall is confident that the team will be fine next season. Finally, the Penn State Brandywine baseball team had the most exciting and memo- rable season this fall. There were some great moments had by all, but the most impressive and greatest in the young history of this 2008-2009 team 1s the 100th win of their coach, Jeff Vickers. Coach Vickers attributes the many wins that he has had over the years to the players that he had the privilege to manage. He still keeps in contact with most of them and congratulated him on the accomplishment. The team consisted of no seniors this semester. The captains of the team were Teddy Seiler, Craig Hannum, and Tommy White, and as stated in an earlier article from the Lion’s Eye they could not be prouder of the accomplishment the coach Vickers has achieved. The pitching was outstanding this season and hopes are high for the spring semester. One awful notch in the baseball’s glory is that their captain, Craig Hannum, injured his elbow in the last game of the season against Neumann College. However, one of the team’s great players James “Jimmy” Burke was recently honored with the PSUAC Player of the Week. With all that has happened for this baseball team this season, they were able to record 11 wins and only 1 loss. : Great job by all teams and the Lion’s Eye Sports hopes for more success to come in the future. : Penn State Brandywine 2008 Soccer & November 5, 200 EE i Baseball Captains (Upper Right: Photo by Jim Gastner), Allison Rankin (Middle Right: Photo by Jim Gastner), 2008 Soccer Team (Bottom Right: Photo courtesty Penn State Brandywine)
