The Presidential debate took place on Thursday, September 25th 2008 at the University of Mississippi’s Gertrude C. Ford Center. Senators McCain and Obama discussed the major differences between themselves, point- ing out the flaws in one another’s plans. McCain pointed out that Senator Obama asked for almost a million dollars a year for port barrel spending for everyday he has been in office, which accounts to 18 billion dollars in the last year’s budget. Obama retorted that McCain is proposing 300 billion dollar tax cuts to some of the wealthiest corporations in the country. Ending the debate with a 9/11 discussion, McCain said that we are a safer nation but a long way from safe. Obama agreed saying that there were mistakes to be made, ~~ and the next administration has a lot to do until it is consid- ered “that shining beacon on a hill.” McCain ended by say- ing that he knows how to heal the wounds of war and how to deal with our enemies as well as our friends. This past Thursday night, Governor Sarah Palin and Senator Joe Biden argued up a controversial storm of their stances and opinions at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Journalist Gwen Ifill was Thursday night’s mod- erator of the Vice Presidential debate. It was the first time the two Vice Presidential candidates had the opportunity to meet. Who won the Vice Presidential debate? The debate it not a competition to be won, but two polls revealed that Biden seemed to have come out of the debate with the upper hand in comparison to Palin. 46 percent of independent votes said Biden won and 21 percent in favor of Palin win- ning as shown in an CBS News/Knowledge Networks Poll, but Palin was found more likeable by 54 percent in a CNN poll versus than Biden was, by 36 percent. The candidates touched on a wide variety of issues from the economy, same-sex marriage, the environment, foreign policy, and the war on Iraq. : This is only skimming the surface of the two debates — the two candidates covered numerous issues not discussed here. There is only about a month to go until the November 4th election and these next few weeks will truly determine who will become the next President and Vice President of the United States. October 8, 2008 PennDOT Warns Drivers About Deer Activity Special to The Lion’s Eye As daylight hours shrink, drivers are reminded to be on the lookout for white-tailed deer darting onto roads across Pennsylvania, said PennDOT Secretary Allen D. Biehler, P.E. “We typically see an increase in the number of deer-related crashes at this time of year,” Biehler said. “Deer are very unpredictable, but motorists can reduce their risk of being involved in a crash with a deer by driving defensively and stay- ing alert, especially when driving between dusk and dawn.” Deer are most active during the fall, par- ticularly between sunset and sunrise. According to statistics, 46 percent of all reportable crashes involving a deer in the past five years have occurred in the months of October and November, with 90 percent occurring in clear weather. Last year, there were 2,482 crashes statewide involving deer, resulting in 596 injuries and eight fatalities. During the fall, deer move around more, travel longer distances and are : less wary of their surroundings, increasing the potential for collisions with vehicles. The possibility of a deer-related crash further increases in October as thousands of hunters take to the woods for the opening of archery and small game seasons. Motorists and hunters can help increase their safety by following a few safety tips: * Be on the alert for hunters entering the woods early in the morning and leaving in the late evening hours. » Slow down and use caution, particularly where deer crossing signs are posted. » Hunters should be certain that their vehicles are pulled as far off the roadway as possible and remember that parking along limited access highways is prohibited except for emergencies. » Ifyou are walking along the roadway, wear reflective clothing and carry a flashlight or a glow stick to help increase your visibility. » Since deer often travel in small herds, one deer crossing a roadway will usually be followed by others. : J * Increase following distance between vehicles. * Morning and late evening hours are the most active for wildlife. * Be sure to make young drivers aware of the - increased deer movement. : + Seek permission before parking on private property. « Always wear your seat belt. * Never drink and drive. « If your wipers are on, your headlights must be on. This is required by state law. To report a dead deer on state roads, motorists can call 1-800-FIX-ROAD. Dear Ebony and Ivory- I was dating a girl who was my ex for a couple of months, Dear Used And Confused- Well Used and Confused, we think that you need to tell Ebony & Ivory but we were not official. She said she didnt have time to date, but liked me and didnt want to be with anyone else. She also wanted me to be her “FIRST”. We both work a lot . and go to school. So we tried to see each other as much as we could. Well out of the blue she went out on a date with another guy and avoided my phone calls that night. She didn t tell me until the next day. I was worried about her. She acted like it was no big deal. I found out that she liked this guy for a long time but he never made a move until now. I found out that she had another date a few days after that. I was very mad and blew up at her and said some things that maybe shouldnt have been said. I tried to hold back but I was truly hurt and felt betrayed. 1 feel like she used me as a crutch until this guy came along. What should I do? Signed- Used and confused her how you feel. If she really cared and felt these things, she should have talked to you about it. But if she liked this guy and just walked away form you then maybe she wasn’t worth the trouble. We aren’t saying give up but give up her some space to soak in what you have to say. Let things simmer down. This whole thing with the new guy might just be her testing her feelings for you. Just be her friend and let her know that you are there for her. She will come back to you when she is ready if not, and then just soil your oats with someone else. If within two weeks she is still with him, just go out and have some fun. Best of Luck- Ebony & Ivory Do you have relationship problems? Going through a tough time in your life?
