The Lion’s Eye October 8, 2008 Gay-Straight Alliance: By Ashley Wood Lion's Eye Staff Writer adw5093@psu.edu The Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) at Penn State Brandywine has managed to be a club that has been virtually nonexis- tent in the past few years. All that is chang- ing this year under the leadership of John Strawbridge, a freshman in the Liberal Arts college. John sees the club as having two main purposes. The first is to be a resource for the gay community on our campus. The obvi- ous goal of a club like the GSA is to be a place where gay and straight people can come together to support and learn from each other. John wants the GSA to have open doors and be there for any member of the LGBT community. ~The other purpose of the GSA this year is awareness. October is LGBT His- tory Month and John wants to make sure that people know what that means. Ev- eryday he will be posting a new flyer on the Bulletin Boards in Main and Tomezko buildings, telling the story of someone from the LGBT community that has made an impact on the world. He also has plans . to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS, to benefit both gay and straight people on our campus. John has fun plans too, includ- ing possible trips to the Gay Film Festival, PRIDE days in Philly and asking people to A Club fo r Change accompany him to the LGBTA Leadership Retreat at University Park in November. The GSA plans on being a big deal on campus this year. John wants to make it clear that the club and its members are looking for acceptance, not separa- tion and encourages everyone to come out and join! “My mission isn’t an obnoxious ‘we’re here, we're queer’ idea...it’s much more subtle than that.” Anyone looking to make a difference in their own lives or the lives of others on our campus, or to just en- joy themselves, should consider joining the GSA. : Friday October 10th is Coming Out Day. This is a day when people of the gay community do not have to be afraid to tell people who they are. It’s also a day for the allied straight community to show their § support — basically it’s a day for acceptance on all sides. The GSA will have two tables set up with lots of pamphlets, pins and rib- bons to give out to the campus! ~ “Other dates to look out for: Octo- ber 19 — AIDS Walk, December 1 — Glob- al AIDS Day, April 16 — Day of Silence. John hopes that everyone will take notice of the GSA and think about joining. He can be contacted by anyone interested at j9s5209@psu.edu. Keep an eye out around campus for information about meetings and other things that the GSA has coming up. By Brian Silvia Lion's Eye Staff Writer emf269@psu.edu Students packed The Lions Den last Thursday for comedian Ronnie Jordan who put on a hilarious performance deal- ing with issues many in attendance could agree with and or relate to. It is hard to pinpoint during the hour long set a time in which there wasn’t laughter. From the moment he picked up the microphone to his last bit about his love affair with honey buns, the crowd was ec- static. He started out with a short seg- ment about the northeast and how cold it ~ gets in the winter months. He continued on with subject matters ranging from planes, different ranges of gay, germs in college to roommate conflicts, his married life, differ- ence in “alone time” for guys and girls and lastly the two types of girls to date. He wasn’t the type of comedian that uses the audience as a big part of his act. However there were a few occasions where he would make a joke about some- thing or someone in the audience. Gener- Comedy in the Den Ronnie Jordan gave a great show. (photo courtesy of Ronnie Jordan) ally 1t was because someone would walk in front of him or an obnoxious cell phone ringer would go off at high volume. The crowd gave him an enormous round of applause when he was finished and deservingly so. He provided everyone with a great form of entertainment that helped bring an escape from school work.
