Coach Jeff Vickers won his 100th game of his career. The team this season has a record of 7-1. Vickers is humble when it comes to his accomplishment. “It’s about the kids,” he says. “tis about the friendships that I have made with the players, past and present.” The team captains think that the coach deserves accolades, however. “He earned it and he worked hard for the win,” said captain Ted Seiler. Craig Hannum, junior, Business, agrees. “He has worked hard as the coach of the team. Coach does not take a day off. He makes the team feel like a family, makes the game fun, and acts like one of the guys.” Tom White, junior, Liberal Arts, can’t say enough about Vickers and the work he does with the team. “It’s just impressive what he has done it over the seven plus seasons.” He agreed with Hannum that Vickers makes the team feel like a family. Vickers takes the compliments in stride however, remarking that he needs to correct White. “It has been technically six seasons, because the 1st season the team went 1-17,” Vickers says with a laugh. The coach has been at Penn State Brandywine for eight years, and feels it is great that he is getting recognized this season. : Hannum said something that was very BrandywineVolleyball By Thomas Alan McGlinchey Lion's Eye Sports Editor tam 160@psu.edu PSU Brandywine Baseball Coach Jeff Vickers (photo courtesy of Pamela Crawford) typical of a sports star, which always rings true when talking sports, which are the expectations for the next team here at Brandywine. “There is nothing left to do but win the Conference Championship,” says Hannum. ; The team has made the finals of the tournament four times but unfortunately, has been disappointed in all the outcomes. Seiler, Hannum, and White all were very adamant about how close the teams that they have served on are. Vickers reiterated the captains’ feelings about the next team. The team Melanie Tyson, a freshman from ChiChester High School, is a volleyball player for the Penn State Brandywine Volley Lions. She would like to-have a degree in Elementary Education. Melanie became involved in volleyball in middle school and it carried into her high school career. She came to Penn State Brandywine because it is close to her home. Her expectations of the Vol- leyball Lions are the playoffs, which they can see in their future. The play- offs are at University Park, in State College, PA. She has never visited University Park and hopes to have a good time up there during the play- offs. Tyson is one that is focused on the work at hand when it comes to academics, and her new job as a ‘helper at her local kindergarten cen- ter. She has only focused on vol- leyball, outside of academics and job, because of her hectic schedule. Her future is unknown at this point, but she is willing to take what ever Brandywine's Women's Volleyball Team Has A Lioness On Its Hands comes her way. Tyson believes that Coach Lomas is proud of the team that he has this season, and Tyson cannot say enough about Assistant Coach Melis- “sa Leinin. “Melissa is an inspiration,” says Tyson. Melanie appreciates that Coach Leinin can bring a former col- lege volleyball player’s perspective to the team. Moving up the ranks is something that Tyson would wel- come and says that if the day ever comes that Coach Lomas asks her if she would like to be a captain of a future team, she would be proud to take that position. Tyson is also talkative on the volleyball court. She can be heard coaching the others to a victory, and has an amazingly optimistic attitude. Even though she keeps her own emo- tions to herself, she can be seen help- ing other teammates when they are feeling tired or emotional. is always to practice on time or earlier, which the coach likes to see. The team plays hard and works hard, as does the coach. Congratulations to Coach Vickers and best of luck to win more games. The team is two games over .500. The Women’s Volleyball team has just about hit their halfway mark through the season and they stand a fair ground in the standings be- ing 6-4. They have played a couple good games, but according to head coach Len Lomas their biggest wins were against Penn State Abington, where they defeated Abington twice in a row this season. For right now, Coach Len Lomas feels that their toughest game was against Penn State Mont Alto. The Lady Lions previously lost to Mont Alto this season. The Lady Lions played with a lot of en- thusiasm and many agree that Mont Alto was a tough team to beat. Brandywine was pushed to the limit for the first time-at home. They showed: Be A Lady Lions Finish Strong a lot of heart, but Mont Alto was too tough for the Volley Lions from Penn State Brandywine. “It was a hard fought game, and this weekend we are out for revenge,” says Lomas. He added that practices are going well and all he ever asks for is the teams full effort at all times. Coach Lomasis also confirdent about his choice of Gina Impagliazzo as team captain. “It was a good choice, she supports ev- erything we ask her to do as captain,” he says. Lomas is really happy with his squad at this point in time, and Impagliazzo agrees. “It’s as if the team has received a second wind,” she says confidently. Impagliazzo also believes that with some formation changes on the court, the team can finish strong. The Lady Lions are off to a good start this season, adds Lomas, and he sees no sign of them slowing down.
