US Takes on Gustav and Hanna Lion's Eye Staff Writer peg5021@psu.edu Hurricane Gustav hit Houma, Louisiana on September 1st, 2008. The winds were clocked in at 110 miles per hour which is a strong category 2 storm. The storm made landfall around 11am in the morning. It was moving northwest to New Orleans and was about 65 miles away when it was redirected to Baton Rouge. This gave Baton Rouge about 6-10 inches of rain and gusts around 90mph which is Hurricane Force. New Orleans was seen as having dodged a bullet because they only had about 3-5 inches of rain with wind gusts of 70 to 75. The levees held very well with the only concern being the southerly wind pushing some water over them. There was very little flooding in the area since the storm was moving at around 15 mph. As Gustav moved toward Texas the storm weakened and slowed down but held together enough to pour rain in Texas for about 2 to 3 days. Finally it moved from the Midwest to Illinois and Missouri and gave them about 2-4 inches of rain over the week of September 3rd. On September 4th, Chicago received 2.90 inches of rain and St. Louis received 3.06 inches of rainfall. As of September 15th, 138 death had been attributed to Gustav in the U.S and the Caribbean. Damage had been totaled in the US as $158 billion and $3 billion in Cuba. Just as people were cleaning up from Gustav they had to start preparing for Tropical Storm Hanna. Hanna came ashore the border of North Carolina and South Carolina at 3:40 am on the morning of Saturday September 6th with 70 mile per hour 34m rad 2 The Lion’s:Eye ' 1 September 23, 2008 Sen.
