The station will be part of a new seismic network being established for the state of Pennsylvania and will be connected to the national network. In the wake of the earthquake in New Jersey early Monday, this new technol- ogy could prove to be a valuable educational and outreach tool for students and the local community. Dr. Andrew Nyblade, professor of geosciences at University Park, is spearheading the Pennsylvania earthquake monitoring network. A member of his lab, Research Associate Jordi Julia Casas, will oversee the project on the Brandywine campus. : Yannuzzi Joins Ese Communications Faculty By Elaine Presto Lion's Eye Staff Writer expS5004@psu.edu (At the beginning of almost every school year, anticipation fills the air. Whether it is to learn something new, meet new people, or just to make it through the year, the anticipation is there. Though the 2008 fall semester is already underway, it seems as though excitement to meet new people has taken over. This year alone, the Penn State Family has employed several new faculty members who are eager to meet their students and vice- versa. One of those new faculty members is Dr. Tom Yannuzzi, who has signed on as a professor of the Communications Arts and Sciences program. Although Dr. Yannuzzi may be new to the Penn State Family, he is certainly not a stranger to teaching communications. Prior to joining our Penn State Family, Dr.Yannuzzi taught at Kutztown University for four years. However, Dr.Yannuzzi’s education experience extends back to the 1980, where he has taught at other institutes such as Temple University, the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Wharton School of Business, and other Penn State campuses. After many years of teaching Dr. Yannuzzi was recognized with the Excellence in Teaching Award from Wharton School of Business. : Being an excellent teacher, one has the right to presume that Dr. Yannuzzi was once an excellent student too. He received his B.A. in Communication and Rhetorical Theory from California State University, went on to receive his M.A. from Temple University, and finally obtained his Ph.D. in Education, Culture and Society from the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to being an educated gentleman, Dr. Yannuzzi does more with his time than just teaching. When not teaching and researching, Dr. Yannuzzi enjoys spending time with his family. Being a family man himself, we here at the Penn State viceawards.gov/ Family are more than eager to welcome Dr. Yannuzzi and his family to ours. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and the Susan Komen 3 Day Walk in Philadelphia happens to fall on the weekend of Oct 17-19. Since this is a disease that has touched a great many of us here on our campus, we are looking to organize a group of people to go to the walk route on Saturday the 18th or Sunday the 19th and cheer the participants on. Walking those 60 miles is grueling and for many, encouragement for their efforts can make the difference between completing the task or calling it a day. For those of you unfamiliar with the 3 Day Walk, participants raise a minimum of $2500 each in sponsorship and then walk 60 miles over the course of 3 days in an effort to spark awareness and raise money to help find a cure for breast cancer. More information can be found by going to this URL: http://www.the3 day.org/site/PageServer?pagename=PL_landing There will be a meeting Thursday, September 25, during Common Hour, room TBA, for those who would be interested in being part of our “cheerleading” group. If - would like to be part of this event, please email Karrie Bowen at kab44@psu.edu for more information. If you can’t come but are still interested in being there, please email Karrie and let her know your availability for that weekend in October. 80 ‘«’ The small parking lot next to the baseball field will be closed after evening classes on Wednesday, 9/24/08 in preparation for the PACAC event on Thursday. The lot will be closed during the day on Thursday and will reopen Thursday evening. We are expecting traffic issues on campus after 6:00pm on 9/25/08 due to evening classes and the College Fair. There are two scholarships available from Vanguard for present juniors (seniors next year). One is for Women in Information Technology and another for Minority Students from business, finance, information technology or liberal arts majors. The deadline for each is November 29, 2008. Finalists are selected on the basis of “academic record (3.0 gpa or higher), demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspirations, unusual personal or family circumstances, recommendation form, and a resume. Financial need is not considered.” Click the links below for more information. Please encourage your eligible students to apply soon. http://sms.scholarshipamerica.org/vanguard/ http://www.sms.scholarshipamerica.org/vanguardwomenintechnology/ os As many of our campus students are active volunteers, all are encouraged to consider working towards earning a President’s Volunteer Service Award. According to the President’s Volunteer Service Award website, in 2003, Presi- dent Bush created the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation to find ways to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making in our Nation. The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation created the President’s Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demon- . strated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service. Rec- ognizing and honoring volunteers sets a standard for service to others. It encourages a sustained commitment to civic participation and inspires others to make volunteering a central part of their lives. The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes individuals, families, and groups that have achieved a certain standard — measured by the number of hours served over a 12-month period. For young adults (average-aged college students), the bronze level award requires 100-174 hours of volunteering, the silver level award requires 175- 249 hours of volunteering; the gold level award requires 250 hours or more. If you are interested in tracking your volunteer hours and pursuing a Presiden- tial Volunteer Service Award, please contact Dr. Laura Guertin inaedidisly (guertin@ psu.edu, TMZKO 102).
