October 23, 2006 New Student Government’s Second Open Meeting By Kat Specht and David Plecenik Lion's Eye Staff Writers kvs5045@psu.edu awpiU3 1 @psu.edu and Visitors to the Lion's Den on Oct. 17 were greeted by an interesting sight. There were tables and speakers set up, but no guest was scheduled to appear. Instead, the Student Government Association (SGA) made the decision to move their open meetings to a more comfortable and, best of all, visible venue. By moving the meeting to the Lion's Den, it makes the meeting visible to people who would not normally be in attendance. The Student Government felt pleased by the increase in the audience caused by the change in the meeting's location. "Last meeting we had one Matt Kelly and one Heather Cuthbert for our audience," Derek McMillan, the SGA's treasurer, joking about the drastic increase of atten- dance in comparison to the first meeting. During the open meeting, the SGA dis- cussed several issues that they felt were important to the Penn State Delaware County community, such as the Council of Commonwealth Student Governments (CCSG) meeting at University Park, fund- ing for clubs, THON, and anything else that the students felt were important enough to bring up to the SGA. The CCSG is important to the campus community because that is the organiza- tion that represents all of the Commonwealth Campuses (such as Delaware County) at University Park. This past weekend they had a presence at the homecoming celebrations and our very own student government was part of the CCSG float in the parade. Natalie Camponele talked about the plan- ning for events on campus for the spring. A few representatives from the campus are attending the upcoming National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) meeting. The NACA showcases entertainers and performers to help schools arrange for them to perform on campus. This meeting will be where deci- sions will be made as to who might be performing here in the spring semester. Something many students will like that was announced at the meeting is that the SGA is looking at purchasing a large plas- ma television for the Lion's Den. They also will have cable running to that new big screen so that students can relax and enjoy whatever programming they want, rather than just MTV U or the campus livewire like most campus televisions. There was also talk of starting our own television station here on campus. This new station would be used during com- mon hour to broadcast news updates in a more interesting form than the current campus livewire. It could also be used for special presentations to be able to reach more of the campus than just the den. Both SGA members and the audience agreed that the meeting was well organ- ized and went well. Some members of the audience were disappointed by the fact that people that were in the area but not for the meeting were talking and having their own discussions. Some members of the audience found this fact distracting. Paul Hurych, the SGA President, did not find this distracting and was pleased with the meeting and attendance. Students can look forward to more of these open meetings throughout the year. The SGA is looking forward to a produc- tive year and many more good things to come. The Writing Center, nested on the third floor of the Main Building in room 312M, is one that students should not ignore. It holds a couple computers, a few tables, chairs and several excellent tutors. The goal of the Writing Center is "to help students become better writings by promoting and supporting the teaching, practice, and study of writing as a form of engaged critical inquiry and social action," according to the center's web- site available at http://www.de.psu.edu/16692. htm. The staff is headed by Pamela Main, an English professor with a knack for creative writing. There are several pro- fessional tutors, peer tutors and work- study students on-hand to help make appointments and explain some of the mechanics of the center. Despite what many students think, the Writing Center is not just for English courses. The tutors are able to assist a student with any written (or spoken, in the case of speech courses) assignment in any class. It is not uncommon for a tutor to help a student with a paper on a subject that the tutor knows little about. What is important to remember is that the tutors are there to improve student writing. Lewis Pickett, one of the tutors and an English 15 professor explains, "We are able to help a student at any stage of the writing process, from the merest glimmer of an idea to the penultimate draft." While the staff would never turn away a student, they cannot write the papers for them. "We're not magicians," stated Ryann Rousse, another tutor and recent Penn State Delco graduate. The tutors can facilitate outlining and brainstorming, organization and citation, introductions and conclusions, Live Music Free Food Creamery Ice Cream Grilled Stickies Contests and Game Family Fun for all ages! When coming to the Writing Center, it is best to arrive with sort of preparation or at least an assign- ment sheet and a few good ideas. However, if a student is having trouble getting started, the Writing Center is there to assist. The Writing Center is open Monday through Thursday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm and Fridays 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. If those hours are not convenient, there is another option, the LION OWL, Penn State Delco's on-line writing lab. The OWL operates Sunday through Thursday, 7:00 to 10:00 pm. To use the OWL, a student logs in and submits his or her work to one of the professional tutors-the same tutors who work in the Writing Center. A student works one- on-one with the tutor in a chat-like set- ting. As long as the work is submitted by 9:30 pm, a response will be available that same evening. To login to OWL, visit http://www.de2.psu.edu/academ- ics/writingcenter/owl/ to get started. A student's best bet when seeking help in the Writing Center is to make an appointment a day or two in advance. However, walk-ins are gladly welcome and the staff is always accommodating. A typical session lasts approximately 30 minutes. If you are interested in making an appointment, visit the center or call (610) 892-1352.
