Page 8 § The Lion’s Eye ye on SPOIL A Winning Proposition PSU Teams are Overshadowed by Football’s Record By KATIE NEWS Lion’s Eye staff writer kmn151@psu.edu For the first time since 1999, Penn State football looks like the Beast of the East again. But ever wonder how other sports teams are doing at various Penn State campuses and even at Main Campus, or is your focus only on the football team's spectacu- lar season? , Yes, it's wonderful that, after five consecutive losing seasons, there is again happiness in Happy Valley as the Nittany Lions boast an impressive record, including coming away with a win in a prime-time conference showdown against eighth- ranked Ohio State. "People who have never really been inter- ested in sports are starting to get excited about the football games, and they are trying to buy | tickets," said student & Matt Kelly. Although the team had a heartbreak- ing loss at Michigan Stadium on Oct. 15, losing in the final sec- ond to the Wolverines, that action-packed game turned even casual watchers into _ sports fanatics. But along with a great football team ; that can be found on the main campus of Penn State University, there are other thriving sports teams who seem to be over- shadowed by the football team's success. For example, did you know that the Lady Lion's soccer team is the only team in the Division I League in the nation that is undefeated and untied. Unless you're really interested in women's soccer, you probably didn't realize this. And unless you're interested in the wrestling team then you don't know that Penn State's wrestling team is ranked number 12 in the pre-season by the Wrestling International Newsmagazine (W.LN.). But what is even worse is when there is mention of a specific sports team or club team on our own campus and some one says, "Oh, we have one of those teams at our school?" Keeping up with sports on our campus is easy. Simply pick up a campus newspaper and you can find updates about teams almost every issue. For sports updates on different campuses or on the main campus = you can .g80 to www.gopsusports.com and get current updates about games and teams all the time. The site holds a great deal of information, so take your time and explore the site. Unsung Heroes Tiffany Weimer, left, tied Brandi Chastain’s NCAA record for scor- ing at least one goal for a record amount of consecutive games. Wrestler Eric Bradley, right, a returning All- American, is ranked No. 1 by both Amateur Wrestling and W.LN. in pre- season tourna- ment ranking. Lady Lions Volleyball Team Made Net Gains This Season Despite Injuries The Lady Lion’s finished their season last week 7-5 in the PSUAC. What was once an unde- feated team was taken over by injuries toward the middle of their season. The girls finished in third place and went into the tournament this past weekend at University Park as the Sth seed from the East. In the first round the ladies will be play- ing Penn State New Kensington. The turning point in their season came when the team was 5-0 during the match at Hazleton when Leah Semmelhaack sprained her ankle and they almost lost Cathy Basquill with a chest injury. Going into their tournament this past weekend the ladies traveled with six of their usual nine players, and this due to injuries amongst the team. Although the team's chemistry on the court seemed to simmer after being hit with so many injuries, the girls still played their best on the court through every remaining match. "The games were fun to watch because the rallies would continue on with some dramatic digs to keep points alive, which kept the crowds into the match and entertained," said coach Brian Phipps. The ladies went into this tournament last weekend with determination and hopes of coming out strong. __ KATIE NEWS
