The guest speaker for the com- mission meeting was Catherine Datte-Smyth, who holds a master’s degree in historic fashions and has spent many years of researching his- toric clothing. She is a Penn State alum and is an English professor at Strayer University in King of Prussia. The Women's Commission is a group of women who have formed to exchange ideas and turn them into practices. Faculty, staff members, students, and technical staff are involved with the Women's Commission. For the luncheon, the front of the room had four tables covered in 18th century belongings, such as bonnets, umbrellas, shawls, corsets, and actu- al books used during the Civil War. Folk music played while guests ate. The lunch was provided by the Lion's Pit, but desserts were donated by many Delco faculty members. Not only does Datte-Smyth make all of her own clothing, but her daughter also makes historic dresses and accessories. She has received many awards for her work. Datte-Smyth gave a PowerPoint presentation called “Women's Roles During the American Civil War,” during which she said feelings of weakness and dependency were an essential characteristic of a true woman in that period. Domestic life then consisted of child care, maintaining a house, sewing, cooking — women often died cooking when their dresses caught on fire — laundry and socializing when appropriate. It doesn't sound like these women were weak. Datte- Smyth went on to tell of all the courageous things women went through and ways they contributed to war efforts. Some roles she spoke about: medical supporters, spies, sol- diers, women in commissions, and as couriers who carried letters. Union army nurses received food, trans- portation, and 40 cents a day; but they also worked 17-hour shifts. Datte-Smyth provided multiple pictures in her presentation. Some pictures included women who were disguised as male soldiers. She explained the three gowns that were on mannequins across the from of the room. The first gown was a walk- ing gown, the second was a ball gown and the third was a workout dress in which women could do gymnastics.
