The Lion’s Eye Eye on SPOI'ts March 22, 2005 Big step forward By KATIE NEWS Lion’s Eye staff writer KMN151@psu.edu As the Penn State Delco Lady Lions’ basketball season came to an end, the team had every reason to feel proud. The Lions experienced — and overcame — many obstacles in a short time. A new player, Megan Russo, was added, and sometimes new things don't always mesh with the old. But Russo was a great asset to the squad, and she mixed well with her team- mates on and off the court. Together, the Lions overcame physical injuries. With more than Hockey Lions go national By JULIA HAGAN Lion’s Eye staff writer JAH1003@psu.edu The Penn State Delaware County ice hockey team concluded its suc- cessful season March 5. The Lions ended the season with a trip to the American Collegiate Hockey Association's Division Three National tournament in Pittsburgh. The Lions defeated defending national champions Calvin College (of Grand Rapids, Mich.) in a 5-4 shootout victory. Out of roughly 90 teams, Delco placed eighth in the nation. Goaltender Jeff Wild was named to the D3 ACHA all-tournament first team. Forward Ryan Cell was awarded most valuable player in the Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey Conference (DVCHC) for the second year in a row. Delco women’s hoops marks turnaround season half the players on the team injured at one point, the Lions still found a way to return after their winter break healthy and able to play effec- tively. As a team, the Lions had an impressive seasoh, compared to 2003-04, when the Lady Lions won only once. With a lot of dedication, endless hours of practice, and love for the game of basketball, the Lady Lions advanced their playing this year to the next level. This season, Delco made it to the championship round of the EPCC, and won 12 games while compiling a .500 record. The Lions fought hard in their championship game against Penn State Hazleton. The Lions were slow to score in the first 10 minutes, while PSU Hazleton seemed to be making almost all of its shots. By halftime though, the Lady Lions were up 12 points. The Lions held on to the lead until the three-minute mark, but three of the players then fouled out. The team fell short of two points in the end, with the final score 81-79. "We played our pressure defense and made them turn the ball over," said coach Joe DiAntonio. Dana Johnson, a sophomore and a starter, finished with 29 points. Cara Zibbelman, a freshman starting guard, had 25 points. Although the Lady Lions couldn't finish off the season as champions of the EPCC, their final record was 12- 12. The men’s team fell just shy of making the playoffs, falling to Penn State Abington, 66-55, in their final regular-season game.
