Ed 5 | March 1, 2008 The Lone Lve i Page " Pye on Campus . Five Quick Questions for ... New campus group gets out and about By DAN DELANEY Lion’s Eye staff writer DRD5002@psu.edu Dr. Michael Madden, a cam- pus psychology professor, and stu- dents Cathy Basquill and Frank Vaccaro, the leaders of Penn State Delco’s Outdoor Leadership Club, sit around Madden's desk joking and laughing. After having two preliminary meetings to see what students and faculty would be interested in doing actively outdoors, the club's focus is youth leadership and using nature to its full advantage. Among the events already planned are a discounted ski trip, a camping trip to Ridley Creek State Park and a rigorous canoe trip in the Canadian wilderness. The club was formed to provide students and faculty with oppor- tunities that Madden, Basquill and Vaccaro have already had or have interest in. All have had some form of out- doors experience. Perhaps this is what sparked the idea for a club in which students and faculty could participate, and develop skills that made them better lead- ers and team players. The proposal did not fall on deaf ears either; after an abun- dance of response, an itinerary for the next few semesters was quick- ly developed. Already on the agenda are the ski and canoe trips, as well as nature walks at Ridley Creek park every Friday; campus-wide - outdoor games for common hour; a camping trip to Hawk Mountain; several backpacking trips; and, possibly, mountain biking excursions. Meetings are held the first Tuesday and third Wednesday of every month during common hour in the Commons building. Vaccaro took his club's goals very seriously, stating: "We want to be the most successful club on campus." That isn't far-fetched either. Another part of the mission state- ment is to stir up more of that "Penn State community" feeling and to involve as many people as possible. The club was the brainchild of Madden and Vaccaro, while Basquill was taken on to "balance the ticket," they say. There's more than enough experience in the these three. Madden has 20 years of experi- ence in the Canadian Wilderness living, while the two students have done everything from white- water rafting to rock climbing. They all feel that activities like this will promote togetherness among otherwise distant students and faculty. The club isn't just for fun either; the canoe trip will serve as a kinesiology credit. Later in the club's progress, leaders and teams will be instituted for each trip. Contact Frank Vaccaro at FRV101@psu.edu. Professor Steven Cimbala joined Penn State Delco in 1973.
