Penn St. hockey club adds fuel to the fire on ice By JULIA HAGAN Lion’s Eye staff writer JAH1003@psu.edu After more than a month without games, the Penn State Delco ice hockey team made a triumphant return over the winter holiday with back-to-back wins on home ice. On Jan. 7, the team defeated Kutztown University, 7-4. The victo- ry provided retribution for a game earlier in the season which resulted in not only a loss, but a serious knee injury for senior captain Thomas Fischer, which is still healing. On Jan. 8, the team defeated Rutgers-Camden, 7-4, with notable performances from freshman goalie Christopher Dalvano, forward Michael Kelly and defensemen Dan Baer and Myles Peterson. The weekend also introduced new players Mike Tremonte (four goals) and Si Swing (two), both displaying impressive offensive skills during their first games. Tremonte played for the Delco team two seasons ago, and was named league MVP. His Friday night hat trick and several assists confirmed that his break from hock- ey has not left him too rusty. "The new players have had an instant impact on our team," said goalie Jeff Wild. "We needed them so we'd have more lines available," said Ryan Cell, forced to view the game from the stands, nursing a persistent knee injury. : The games against Kutztown and Rutgers-Camden were preparation for Delco's tournament trip to Florida Gulf Coast University. The team competed in the Compuware Gulf Coast Clash Jan. 14-16 in Estero, Fla. The Lions head- ed south without several key team members due to injuries and other obligations. "We'll be missing a lot of players," sald senior defenseman Ryan Meade. "But our team has an incredible amount of stamina. I think we can still do well." Delco was the only northeastern school selected for the tournament, along with Florida Gulf Coast University, University of Texas, and University of Central Florida. Ranked first in the Atlantic region of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) division III standings, the Delco squad is eager to exhibit its skills in Florida but recognizes that the unfamiliar teams will pose a challenge. "I wish we could go at full strength," said Fischer. "But we'll do our best."
