By JULIA HAGAN Lion’s Eye staff writer JAH1003@psu.edu Men's hoops team struggles out of gate The men's basketball team began its season on The Lion's Eye November 23, 2004 Nov. 11 with a home game against Philadelphia Community College. Delco trailed PCC the entire game; at the half the score was 46-31 and the game ended 100-85. "We turned the ball over too many times," said junior captain Mike Johnston. "But it was only the first game so everyone was a little rusty." "We had 32 turnovers and you can't win any game like that," said senior Steve Corey. Despite the team's unsuccessful first game, team members remained confident in a winning season. "I'd say compared to last year, this year we will be very competitive," said Johnston. "We will not be satisfied with anything less than the » championship." "To win upcoming games," said Corey, "we need to be smart with the ball, patient on offense, we can't be selfish, and we have to play like a team." By KATIE NEWS Lion’s Eye staff writer KMN151@psu.edu Women grab two wins The Penn State Delaware County women’s basketball team jump- started its season with a 62-42 win against Delaware County Community College Nov. 13. Dana Johnson was the high scor- er with 25 points. Katie McBreaty contributed with 14 points and 14 rebounds. The team was satisfied with their playing, as was coach Joe DiAntonio. "They had good floor spacing, and kept the ball in transition, and they made a lot of shots," said DiAntonio. The girls also played Nov. 15, against Penn College, losing, 79-39. The Lions were aggressive but slop- py, and their shots were off. At half- * time, only four of 43 shots had fallen. "After winning the first. game," said forward Megan Peterkin, "and then losing the second one, it put ‘home, 66-45. "We didn't play as a team, and had way too many turnovers," said Thornton. "The defense was terrible." "We played lazy defense," added Corey. "We played selfishly." Saturday, the Lions lost, 71-41, to Penn State New Kensington. "We have to work on the fundamentals," said head coach Gary Kasmer. "Like passing and rebounding. It's a good bunch of guys though. They work hard. They play hard. I think it's going to happen." The next home game is Nov. 30 against Penn State Schuylkill. "They played good defense and had a lot of rebounds." § Hockey team takes two from the Navy The PSU Delco hockey club traveled to Annapolis, Md., and for the first time in four years, Delco defeated Navy's B team, winning 5-1 and 7-5. A concussion for freshman offense- man Mike Kelly added to the growing list of team injuries. Nov. 13, Delco faced Edinboro at Face-Off Circle in Warminster, and after surrendering a three-goal lead, tied 4-4. An end-of-the-game fight resulted in a three-game suspension for leading scorer Ryan Cell due to a facemask violation. The next home games for Penn State ice hockey are Dec. 3 against Muhlenberg University and Dec. 4 against team rival Penn State Berks. Home games are held at Ice Line in West Chester.
