September 20, 2002 Eve on Campus The Lion’s Eye Page 3 Cool beans: Coffee bar is hot stuff Bm American Coffee and Tea Company is serving up the java. By GERRY DUNGAN Lion’s Eye staff writer It would seem that Penn State Delco is in for a polite awakening. Early morning in the Classroom Building, a sudden spurt of steam gives way to strong and alluring aromas. Tinkling glasses of strange colored liquids stand at ready next to the odious whir of concoctions being blended. The mysterious mixtures are poured very carefully in various sized containers, which is received in zombie-like hands of students and faculty alike. A few moments later, from their lips draws fresh breaths of vitality and pleasantries all around. If one was careful and visited the Classroom building at least once this year, he might find something new... or not. For the little coffee shop, also called the American Coffee and Tea Company, blends in perfectly with it's sur- roundings. Green bumpers that match the green railings, sidings the same shade of dull gray that is the entirety of the Classroom lounge's persona, and a clever canopy that dis- tracts the eye from all the shiny instruments that are nois- ily busied with throughout the day. "Not sticking out...is really [a] big part of success," said Dan Kelly, proprietor of the American Coffee and Tea Company. By blending in on campus, according to Kelly, he is ful- filling one of the major goals he set for himself here at Delco, "[To] bring everyone together in a central loca- tion." He said. Check out the ‘coolest’ place on campus!” Shaoxian Yu says goodbye to the campus he ‘loves’ By SARAH GALLATIG Lion's Eye staff writer Photo by Meredith Becker Shaoxian Yu says he loves working with Penn State Delco students. However, he recently announced his Imminent departure for a position at George Mason University. Penn State Delco is losing one of its most respected fac- ulty members. Dr. Shaoxian Yu has decided to accept a position as assistant director for diversity programs and services at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. Yu has been working at Penn State Delco for almost three years. Before working at Penn State, he was employed at three other well-known schools. He worked in China, Ohio, and also the University of Georgia. "This is the campus I loved. I love the students here from the bottom of my heart,” said Yu. Yu’s title at Penn State Delco is assistant director of student affairs. He has a lot of respon- sibilities on campus, including advising SGA, student clubs, health and wellness programs, and being a personal coun- selor for students. Yu said that leaving Penn State is, ‘going to break my heart, I have so many personal relationships with so many students.” He wants to say “goodbye to every student personally.” Although the short time allot- ting he may not be able to. “I think he made some good bonds with students that are going to miss him,” said Doreen Hettich-Atkins, the director of student life. “He will leave a hole in the depart- ment; in terms of student organization and program- ming, we will do our best to fill it quickly in a way to serve the needs of students.” Shaoxian is not excited about leaving. He enjoys see- ing ‘“‘students making progress either academically or person- ally” every day. He also has a message for all the students at Penn State Delco that he wants to leave: “To all the students I may not get a chance to say good- bye to, I care and love each and every one of you,” he said.
