Page 8 The Lion's Eye October 10, 2001 all Spor PSU Delco ‘LOVE By ADAM WOJCIECHOWICZ Assistant Editor Defending a championship title isn't easy - just ask the Delco tennis team. The team placed first in singles at the end of last year's season among the Commonwealth colleges, and now faces a new challenge with a new roster. Their record stands at 2 for 3, with wins against PSU Abington and PSU Mont Alto. Regardless, hopes are high as several matches are yet to be determined, including the Oct. 20 and 21 championship played at Main Campus. "We think we're gonna win it. Our confidence is very high," said Naresh Reddy, sophomore, ranked fifth among the men. The team is made up of 13 players i in all, nine men and four women. : - Leading the team in his fourth year with Delco is Coach Bill McCourt, who ‘has also been a tennis instructor at Delaware County Community College since 1992. McCourt also happens to be a retired Philadelphia . police officer. Knowing this, you might expect the team practices to be more like a regimented training camp than practice for a "game" - you would also be surprised, though. "I'm not one of those hard drivers - I like to have fun with these guys. And I know they all have lives outside of the game," said McCourt on his coaching style. In characteristic lighthearted fashion, you might hear McCourt shout out during practice a few of the Fall sports schedule Date % ORpenent : Oct. 11 R EPCC Playoffs Oct. 13 S EPCC Tournament Oct. 21 SN ~~ PCAA Championship (West) Coach: Tom Preger ; Soccer | Date Day Opponent Location Time . Of note, listen for "Ace," "Blue Eyes," "Brandy," or "Barf, " a couple of the top play- ers in the men's category. "He's a great guy. He's very honest," said Cathy Nguyen, placed third among the women. "But he'll definitely let you know if you should be embar- rassed." "Be smarter than me!" yelled McCourt in one prac- tice, just after spitting out a stream of corrections and pointers to his players. "It's not that hard," he adds afterward, eliciting smiles and chuckles, and releasing some of the com- petitive tension in a grueling practice match. ~~ “Just hit the ball back one more time!" he calls out later, trying to get to the heart of the matter as usual. "The knucklehead on the other side'll screw it up." Bob Heise, a sophomore player, notes his own experience. "This is the first year I've played with the team," said Heise. "And it's nice to work with such a skilled and personable group as this." The men's roster consists of, in descending rank: José Mancia, Chris Ferrigno, Chris Nevin, Brandon Goveas, Naresh Reddy, Mike Coskun, Umesh Nair, Bob Heise, and Pete Nguyen. The women's roster consists of, in descending rank: Jessica Weber, Tori Davidson, Cathy Nguyen, Jamie Maranella. Be sure to keep an eye on the team as the season comes to a close in October. And remember to watch . out for the "Barf" - I hear he's got quite a mean serve. Way to volley! PSU Delco plays to win By SHAWN PETTIT Staff writer son needed the proof, they could - right in any girls' volleyball game. No one usually says they believe this, but everyone knows that girls are stronger than guys. If any per- go check out the local volleyball team. All the proof they need is Penn State Delco's girls volley- ball team plays against other Penn State schools and smaller local colleges such as Delaware County Community College and Philadelphia Community College. Their coach is Tom Pfleger. The ‘matches are set up on a best-out- of-three basis. There are usually 3 to 4 teams at every match. . The Sept. 26 match took place at our school. Our opponents were Bucks County College and Stevens Technical College. Penn State Berks County was also there to compete against those teams but did not play PSU Delco. The first match up was against “Bucks. The first game was consid- erably close, with Delco bringing the game to a tie at 30, but the ‘Bucks team took the game after gaining a 2- point lead at the end to make the game 32-30. However, after that, it was all Delco. The girls won the second and third games to take the match. Delco player, Jackie De Salvo, was the saving grace of those games, being the only one to score any aces, which is when a team scores a point on a serve. The scores were 30-20 and 15-5. After PSU Berks took on Bucks and Stevens Tech, it was our turn again. Stevens Tech played a good game, but the effort of Delco play- ers such as center. Lauren Longbottom and Chrissy Kelly, who both made fantastic diving plays, proved to be no match for the girls from Stevens Tech. PSU Delco took the match in 2 games. The scores were 30-17 and 30-21. Any sports fan would've thor- oughly enjoyed watching the team play. They work well together and the games are definitely action- packed. It's not every day that you see people flinging themselves across a hardwood gym floor to hit a ball. There aren't any more games to go and see this season, but if you're still around next year, check the team out. These girls know how to play hard and any sports fan would thoroughly enjoy this level of action. Cartoon Corner TWN , WE HAVE ND 0D TOON, Bur... . UNFORTUNA-|
