Page 4 The Lion's Eye April 24, 2001 Students honored for contributions By ANTEIA CONSORTO Editor-in-chief Last week, the Student Life office and the Student Government Association honored the following students: Beatrice Broughton, president of the Adult Student Organization, won the Outstanding Adult Student Award. * The award recognizes an adult student who demonstrates initiative, tenacity, and flexibility in overcoming obstacles to further her education. The focipiont also serves as a role model for other students. Broughton has served as the president of the adult stu- dent group for 2000- 01. She has been very conscientious about trying to spark interest in her group. She maintains a 4.0 GPA and has worked as a horticulturist in Longwood Gardens and Swarthmore College. ‘Her long-term goal is to work in a business environment to show that someone her age can compete with the traditional student. Jeffrey Veacock won the Outstanding Student Service award. The award recognizes a student who has given outstanding service to the campus and community by assisting individuals and improving situations. As president of the Penn State Nittany Christian Fellowship club, Veacock has always made serve to his fellow students his top priority. He volunteers for any community serve project that THON offers and he is con- Sly encouraging people to get involved with helping others. Elvina Gbee was awarded the Cross-Cultural Understanding Award. The honor is bestowed upon a stu- dent who has clearly demonstrated that individual differ- ences are valuable and that learning about others who are culturally different is both necessary and rewarding. Gbee is the senate leader of the campus cultural clubs, officer of the multicultural council, and has demonstrated her commitment to diversity by her ongoing contribution to the campus. She has been involved with the cultural fashion show, unity day, the Martin Luther King Jr. pro- gram, and served as a tutor with Penn State’s community service program. Dory Shea won the Eric A. and Josephine S. Walker Award for her character, leadership, and citizenship that have positively influenced students and the campus at large. Shea received a certificate and engraved medal, and her name will be inscribed on a local plaque on per- manent display at the campus. Shea has been instrumental in educating fellow students and the community about issues surrounding those with. disabilities. She has planned and implemented two very successful disabilities awareness weeks that have become models for other campus’ to follow. As a result of her gentle and sometimes not so gentle nudges, the campus has recently added automatic door openers to the oldest building on campus and will be ren- ovating two of the restrooms in that building to be more accessible to people with disabilities. One of the many student winners Cadet Jason Smith was awarded the ROTC Medal for his leadership qualities, military bearing, and general .excellence. The medal is suspended from a ribbon of the Sons of the American Revolution colors. A ribbon bar in the SAR colors is included with an engraved certificate.
