Page 4 - LIONS EYE - ~ April, 1999 Opinion 4 Zeview He Said You Don’t Have to Be a Hillary! By Regis Fields Assistant Editor “Ya’ Don’t Have to be a Hillary,” and “ But baby I love you,” or how about, “ If you love me why are you leaving?” Time has echoed those words for just about as long as there has been men, fella’s, guys, dawgs, whatever you want to call the male species. Now this is the ‘He said’, version of the stand by your man issue, but the ladies need to hear this, and the gentlemen should sit back and be silent to that which most of us know deep down is true. What is true you ask? The fact that standing by your man may not be the best course of action sometimes. You don’t have to be a Hillary! As everyone knows, who has not been in a cave or on a commune with no kind of broadcast technology, William Jefferson Clinton and his spouse Hillary Roddham Clinton have seen some drama in their lives thanks to Bill’s lust for life. O.K., first off the affair was with one Monica Lewinski. If it were me the affair would have been with Tyra Banks or Kiana Tom from Kiana’s Flex Appeal on ESPN2...I thought he was the most powerful man in the country. But that is really besides the point, ae is he took a public office and the public nature of his lifestyle and said, * Monica will I see you tonight,” knowing full well that he is married. But cool though right? So what was wrong about all of this? One, every politician on the ‘Hill was all of a sudden in a moral position to drag his business out in the open. Two, you know the media didn’t help any, and sex caricatures were prevalent from the New York Times to the Delaware County Times. Three, and most importantly I believe, in all of our nation’s struggle for the truth and “search for stability, it was like through nonverbal communication we forced Ms. Hillary to being the strong, understanding, matriarch of our nation and almost willed her not to do anything drastic. Drastic like what, drastic like kickin’ his Little Rock booty out on the White House lawn with his sax, his dogs, and that present he got from the United Arab Emirates. I asked myself, “how come Bill keeps smiling, I mean he doesn’t look beat up, but I know my girl Hillary is beating him down with the verbal attack.” And man, I still think she is beating his posterior, but for some reason they are still together. Someone that I asked about this question gave me the answer of, she is only doing it for the nation.” My answer to that was she doesn’t owe us anything, this is her business, her cheating man, and her domestic policies, not ours. Then someone was like, “well maybe she plans to use this as some form of platform for an upcoming election where her proverbial ‘hat’ will be tossed in the ring. I thought about that one and once again my version of common sense took over, directing my thought to women that hold her in high esteem. I'll tell you what, I don’t have a daughter but if I did and she idolized our enigmatic First Lady I wouldn’t want her thinking ignoring be- trayal in marriage is O.K. as long as it either helps you or quiets national gossip. Not being a female really puts me at a loss here, because I try to put myself in her shoes and those of her national sisters, but I still can’t figure why the Hellman’s Mayonnaise the two of them still occupy the same Maison Blanche. Then it hit me like she should be socking him. Hey, does anybody remember Chelsea? Very common throughout the United States are couples who are still together because of the children, my ex-girlfriend’s parents for one. Maternal instincts still apply here, Hillary may be the First Lady and former lawyer extraordinaire, but I will bet anyone that her child, her daughter, still occupies the majority of her gray matter. Now, in many cases of parents who are together for their children, cases I have seen, the fact that they were still together wreaked more havoc on the child’s psyche than if mom and dad lived miles away from each other. But who knows the First family’s dilemma, all I’m really trying to say is, ladies...ya’ don’t have to stay with your men if they have been caught in infidelity.” I know if this were to happen to me I would want another chance like Bill probably is looking for, but I can’t in good spirit tell you that they deserve another chance. Something like this is often a trait of the man caught with his ‘state of the union’ in foreign territories, and because of that it can become a behavioral pattern. So just watch out O.K. sista’s! And remember, Hill’ is great and all, but maybe even she wouldn’t say, ‘ do as do.’ WRITERS WANTED The Lion’s Eye is always looking for creative news writers. She Said Hillary: “Stand By Your Man.” By Aimee Stone and Sarah Stover Editor-in-Chief and Lion s Eye Staff Writer The issue of whether Hillary should have left Clinton or not is a very complicated dilemma. On the news programs and talk shows, the media like to shrink the issue into a clear, black and white situation with an undisputed solution. Problem is, the solution depends on who you talk to. The Clintons are not just any American family, they are the President of the United States, the First Lady and their Generation X daughter. Hillary has a lot to consider when dealing with her personal affairs mainly because her personal affairs are not personal. The drama of the Clintons’ life hits the American media full force, nothing that can be found about the President and his family are left out on the five o’clock news. With this kind of unbelievable burden on Hillary’s shoulders, she is probably reluctant to follow her true instincts because of political pressures. Either way, however, she can not win. So she decided to stay with her hus- band who can’t keep his pants zipped, and she is called a coward and a fail- ure to the woman’s movement for equality. On the other hand, if she leaves him in the middle of his term, she can then be labeled harsh, immoral by religious certain standards, and unforgiving by the public. Her situation is a no - win battle. Then there is Chelsea. No doubt, Chelsea probably has a great influ- ence over her parents and she was surely considered when Hillary decided to stay with Bill, but she is not a child anymore. Chelsie will have to make her own decisions about her father as her mother did. And who knows? Hillary might not be done in her role as a pissed - off wife. After Clinton is out of office, she might hit him with a separation or even a divorce. So, if she is staying simply to hold her husband’s political image and platform together, then she is a stronger woman than I thought. She is then doing what is better for the nation, and not for herself. Let’s face it, although Bill seems to have a problem keeping his pants up because of 20-something year old interns, he is doing a damn good job of running this country. Prices are down, the value of the American dollar is up and ‘the economy has been booming under Clinton’s term. Unemployment is reaching record lows throughout the coun- try, and let’s not forget all he has done for college students, with financial aid and grant money as well. Bottom line—Hillary is a very intelligent and cunning woman. She has political power, agendas and responsibilities of her own. She and Clinton almost ran a dual presidency in the beginning of his term and they probably still do now. Our point is simply this: Hillary is far from foolish. She knows exactly what she is doing. As far as standing by your man? If it were any other family we would have to say the decision should be to dump the hus- band, but this isn’t just any family. None of us can honestly say what we personally would do in Hillary’s shoes because there is no way we could even begin to compare her life with our own. She is in the spotlight every day of her life. That alone is enough to drive a person insane, yet she goes through it every day and she stands next to the President of the United States, a politically brilliant man who also happens to be morally questionable. Quite possibly, the First Lady knows some things about her husband that we, as the public, do not. After all, she is ultimately the one who has to deal with him as both her spouse and the father to her daughter. Above everything else, in life and especially when living life while viewed by the world, shit happens.... But we have to say, Hillary is dealing with it extremely well.
