May 1, 1997 — LION’S EYE — Page 7 Summer Math Programs Give Girls New Options By Paul Basilio A recent study done in the scientific field revealed that only between thirteen and sixteen percent of all employed scientists are women. According to the Engineering Workforce Commission, only seventeen percent of Bachelor Degrees in Engineering are granted to women. These numbers lead to stereotypes that women are inferior to men in some fields. This is not true. At a very young age, girls and boys have the same capabilities in reading, writing, and mathematics. Most differences found later in life are based on social, cultural, and family expectations coupled with a traditional teaching style that focuses on boys' interests and behaviors. To combat these negative signals, Penn State Delco will host the sixth annual Math Options program, a carcer/ mentoring day for girls interested in the math and science fields. This event, offered both on May 16 and May 23, will involve over two hundred seventh grade girls from over fifty different schools in the Chester, Delaware, and Philadelphia counties. The days are sponsored by Arco, Mobil Qil, Lockheed-Martin, and Hewlett Packard. Professional women from the local community, whose careers range from veterinarians to chemical engineers, will talk to the girls and conduct small experiments related to their fields. “The women will talk about their families and their careers, and how they weld them together,” said Terry Devlin, Staff Assistant for the Math Options program. “Women take time from their busy schedules to come out and talk to these girls. They see the need and care enough to come,” adds Dr. Patricia Van Leuvan, Assistant Professor of Education. Female students are still needed to be group leaders. Anyone interested should see Dr. Van Leuvan in room 123 Vairo. SGA President-to-be Anton Shuford poses wi League at the sixth annual Marcel Carter Basketball Classic. In their positive form these qualities represent good attributes of a person, but when expressed in their negative form they represent a darker side to people. Both are included in your horoscope below. Aries (March 21-April 19)- Positive: Innocence, blind faith and raw courage. Negative: Selfish egotism, thoughtlessness, and impulsive action. Now that the semester’s over, it’s about time you let that person you've been drooling over all spring know how you feel. Make your move now or face a summer of regret. If you are currently involved in a relationship, expect romances to take a more serious turn. Taurus (April 20-May 20)- Positive: Strength of purpose, patience, and conviction. Negative: Blind prejudice and lack of reason. Plan on a busy work schedule ahead, but don’t become so absorbed you forget how to relax. The Spring Fling proves to be just that, a fling, so don’t get in too deep. Expect surprises in July. Gemini (May21-June 20)- Positive: Versatility, mental alertness, and quickness of perception. Negative: Restlessness, shallowness, and self- deception. A return to an ex is in the cards. Now is also the time to weed out unreliable friends. Follow your instincts. Watch out for major mood swings as you become more self- indulgent. This summer isa good time to patch up old friendships gone dry. Meanwhile, someone close to you wants to be more than just friends. Give them a chance. Leo (July 23-August 22)-Positive: Generosity, warmth, and leadership. Negative: Arrogance, vanity, and romantic promiscuity. Adventure-seeking Leo has been unusually reserved lately. It’s time to take on a new challenge. Pick a path less chosen. Outside forces, like meddling friends, could lead you to the doorstep of Mr./Miss Right (or at least Mr./Miss Right Now). Virgo (August 23-September 22)- Positive: Clarity of thought, courtesy, practicality. Negative: Crankiness, criticism, pessimism. Stop letting people walk all over you and don’t be afraid to splurge. Just ask 2nd semester Penn State Delco landscape contracting major Jeffrey Althouse. Because of him, the Westbrook Park Elementary School now has a science lab that the fifth graders actually designed themselves. In October 1996, Jeff started working as a volunteer at the Westbrook: Park ‘Elementary School. After he helped the fifth graders create their own science lab, the students completed various projects, such as a water garden and a butterfly garden. This was all accomplished during the time that Jeff was working through Professional Field Experience, the program he became involved in at Upper Darby High School as a senior. A scholarship from the Pennsylvania Governors School paid for Jeff's textbooks, and this enabled Jeff to-do deserveit. A recent problem will work itself out in your favor. This summer is all about taking chances; plan on a memorable one and take a vacation with friends. Libra (September 23-October 22)- Positive: Justice, intelligence, and charm. Negative: Laziness, indecision, argumentativeness. Stop being so bossy! Your progress in the months that lie ahead is greatly influenced by others. Listen and learn from them for once. This semester was filled with a lot of ups and downs, but all of your hard work will pay off. Like a true scorpio you'll get what you want, but watch out for jealous friends-they’ll want what you have and may try to make you feel guilty. Sagittarius (November 22- December 21)-Positive: Optimism, cheerfulness, honesty. Negative: Emotional confusion, carelessness, rudeness. Enjoying life in the fast lane lately? Slow down! Don’t forget about old friends, someone is in great need of your advice right now. This summer is all about finding yourself. Try volunteer work. “I enjoy showing the students what types of learning they can actually experience — like by using their hands, actually getting out there and doing it, instead of just sitting inside learning from a textbook,” he says. Jeff continues to volunteer at Westbrook Park Elementary with Mrs. Hanson, the fifth grade science teacher. He works three days a week, for a total of about nine hours. As a result of Jeff's hard work and dedication to the students, the school district now has a science club that involves kindergarten kids to fifth graders. Jeff’s favorite aspect of his volunteer work is just being able to work with the different students. “I like seeing them getting enjoyment out of what they have done. The students enjoy getting out there and doing something — they like seeing it being done and knowing what they're doing it for.” What Do the Stars Reveal for You This Month? vacationing somewhere new.
