By James Foltz Netscape, Powerpoint, Eudora, Excel, Word and Windows, to name just a few, are even more readily available than before. That's because a new PC lab will be fully operational at the beginning of the fall semester in order to fill a growing need for more technology. The lab, located in the Vairo Library, complements two other fully operational labs. This new PC lab, replacing an older, outdated lab once filled with the 1980's model Macintosh SE, will be fully equipped with “software that the typical college student would generally need. The accessible software in the new lab includes word processing, presentation, and Internet programs. A laser printer will also be available for academic student use. Finally, like the current computer labs, lab assistants will be present throughout the day, helping students with technical problems and basic computer use. Service Corps Spends Summer Fixing Homes, Feeding Homeless By Kira Jordan Millions of hungry and homeless human beings are citizens of our country. These suffering men, women, and children exist in our own community and are degraded, silent witnesses of a cruel injustice facilitated by our acceptance. In reality there is much each of us can do to relieve the situations of these deprived citizens of our nation. This summer, members of our campus Service Corps decided to take action against poverty. Regular Saturday trips were made throughout the summer by instructor John Terrell and students Katie Godin and Johanna Licciardello to Habitat for Humanity in Chester to assist in the construction of a home for a grandmother of very low income. “We've met and worked with some fun and interesting individuals during our Saturday visits to Habitat this summer and plan to return throughout the semester. We can’t solve all of the problems of poverty, but it is fulfilling to make some contribution to try to make some people’s lives better,” said John Terrell. The Habitat volunteers do everything from erecting drywall to sanding and painting. The particular house that the Service Corps has worked on this summer is coming to completion at this. time and another site will soon be opened in Chester for an additional family. In addition, five students from the Service Corps made an excursion to Kensington this summer to spend a weekend at the St. Francis Inn. The St. Francis Inn houses up to nine volunteers while the volunteers devote their time to preparing and serving meals to families of low income at the Inn’s soup kitchen. “I found this experience to be a lot of fun. Our group served meals to a total of about six hundred people during our three days at the Inn. When I saw the smiling faces of the children I served, there was no where I would rather been than with them,” commented Johanna Licciardello, president of the Service Corps. The Service Corps is seeking more volunteers for both Habitat for Humanity and the St. Francis Inn, as well as many other sites in the area. If you would like to become involved, attend a Service Corps meeting or visit the Volunteer Service Center, room 137 in the Commons building, to find out more. What's Happening?
