February 8, 1995 — LION'SEYE — @ 0 RTS Rose Bowl A True Experience for A True Lioness By Bob Lewis This Holiday season, most of us were content to watch the Rose Bowl on T.V. but Sara Whildin, Head Campus Librarian, had the opportunity to attend the Rose Bowl in person in Pasadena California. As a long time fan and supporter of the Nittany Lions this trip was the culmirfation of many years of following and supporting Penn State football. Sara has expressed, over the years, a great admiration for Joe Paterno. Sara remarked, “ It was a great experience and the atmosphere was Blue and White everywhere I went. It was wonderful to be with other Penn Staters from around the country , celebrating the return of the Nittany Lions to the Rose Bowl after an absence of seventy-one years." Sara had only good things to say regarding the spirit of competition between the “Ducks” of Oregon and the Nittany Lions. “ The “ducks” fans wore duck calls around their necks and blew them whenever a Lions fan or Blue and White came into view. The Penn Staters countered with impromptu cheers of “We Are..." “It was all good-natured fun, and I saw no incidence of bad sportsmanship from the players or the fans.” Sara continued, “Before the game, there was a big pep rally on the grounds outside the players’ quarters. The senior players and the “All American” players addressed the crowd. There was some good natured ribbing between the players and the coach. The starting quarterback mentioned that Joe Paterno was only twenty-four when the Nittany Lions last played at the Rose Bowl, which - was countered immediately by Joe that the back-up quarterback would be starting the game”. Sara concluded by saying, “ the Pep Rally was organized by Fran Fisher, the radio announcer that covers the games for Penn State.” In closing, She advised, “ Save all of your pennies, because we're returning to the Rose Bowl next year, and ever one should have the experience. Nancy Barrett flying high on her horse Student Profile: Nancy Barrett: By Bob Lewis Nancy Barrett, a second semester accounting major at PSU Delco, is not your ordinary athlete. Unlike most student, athletes here at PSU Delco Nancy competes, coaches, and trains at a sport more difficult than the average person can understand. She is an equestrienne as well as a successful competitor in the tetrathalon. Nancy's story began as an infant when her mother took her riding on her horse. At age six, Nancy was already an avid horse rider and began showing horses. That year, Nancy was accepted into the United States Pony Club (USPC). Currently she belongs to many riding organizations and competes in events such as hunter shows, show jumping, combined training, eventing, dressage, and, most extensively, in mounted games (a form of pony racing with teams of four to five members). In 1984 Nancy joined the Rose Tree Pony Club Mounted Games Team. This proved to be the take off point for her horseback riding career. In six of her twelve years in the club Nancy has succeeded to the national level, and for two years to the championship level. Last year she sustained an injury during competition after falling off her favorite horse “Irish” during “Show Jumping” and was confined to using crutches. Competing at the championship level ‘enabled Nancy to compete on the Eastern Pennsylvania Regional Team. On top of this extensive amount of experience, she has competed internationally for the United States, racing against teams from all over the world, including the formidable and world renowned British teams. On the local level Nancy participates in the Devon Horse Show. Looking ahead, she said, “I hope to be included in a very difficult jumper class with my horse "Irish." Nancy, under the trained eye of Captain Michael Stahl of Valley Forge Military Academy, is working hard to learn more about this vast and oftentimes tedious sport. She commented, “Captain Stahl is absolutely the most fabulous and incredibly talented instructor I ever had." Nancy has been Captain of Trish.” National Champion several different teams in the past eleven years, and also has been a coach for the past five years, taking her teams (ages 3 to 6) to the National and the Championship Levels. She also coached three teams for Regional Competitions and for a National Championship competition in the Meadowlands Arena. Her Teams have won the title of Reserve Champion Juniors on the Nation. Personally, Nancy has won a number of awards and titles. These include: Division Championships, Division Reserve Championships, Year-end High Standings, Pony Club Spirit Award, (two years in a row), and the A. Richard Ross Memorial Games Trophy (two years in a row). Nancy also received the Coaches’ award and the Individual Achievement Award at this years’ USPC banquet. When not competing or attending classes full-time as a Dean’s list accounting major carrying 16. credits a semester, Nancy is a life guard 20 hours a week at an indoor pool in West Chester. Last summer she taught at the Valley Forge Military Academy as Horsemanship Instructor. She also "She has competed internationally for the United States, racing against teams from all over the world, including the formidable and world renowned British teams." gives clinics in Pennsylvania and other surrounding states. The team will be competing internationally in August. Her hope is to compete for the U.S. in the Olympics in the year 2000. Nancy said, “I really like this campus and the atmosphere is really great.
