—LION’SEYE — Gpinion Even: Editorial: Eliminate Prejudice at Delco By James Foltz In a utopian society the inhabitants of the world live in perfect harmony and peace together. It is a society without wars, famine, poverty or... Prejudices. On the last Friday of January, Penn State Delco students and staff went on a “retreat.” This “retreat” confronted the issues of prejudice which go on in our society today. Why would someone hate another being because of their color, ethnic or religious background? Why would a person hate another from the day of his or her birth just because of a difference in culture? I don’t understand that kind of thinking. Don't Charles Manson, Jim Jones, Adolf Hitler, or Jeffrey Dahmer deserve hate a little bit more than a baby who was born yellow, black, or white? Don’t you think that those four men might be a little more deserving of angry emotions than someone who may be Jewish, Hindu, or Christian? Everyone has heard of the cliche “don’t judge a book by its cover.” Why: doesn’t anyone ever listen to it? I attended that “retreat” which I spoke of earlier. 1t really opened up my eyes. It really gave me a little bit more hope for a utopian society which had no prejudices. I don’t have any rabbits to pull from my hat to make everything right in the world, let alone this campus (which has some serious racial problems), but I do have suggestions do give, and I do have a cliche’ to reiterate into your ears once more. First of all, how about we all read that book. Read that book with an open mind and an open heart. Then, after that book has been read, you can look at the person and make a judgment of character, but only the person, not the race. And here's the cliche, when viewing people, one must be “Color Blind.” There are acceptable ways and unacceptable ways to treat one another. As students of Penn State University, we are here for one reason, and that is to further our education. We are here to broaden our perspectives of the world which we live on. We are not just here to learn the mass of a hydrogen atom, nor “Higher Learning” Rates An ‘8’ By David Schiff You may be one of the many people that believe living away at college will be the best time of your life. But the vision of college in the new John Singleton film Higher Learning is frightening. Higher Learning , starring Omar Epps (The Program) and Michael Rapaport (Zebrahead) , takes pace in fictitious Columbus University. Epps plays Malik Williams, a freshman attending the university on a track scholarship. Malik must figure out how to make time for sports and academics, his girlfriend Deja (Tyra Banks), and other campus issues while dealing with racial tension. Malik looks to Professor Phipps (Laurence Fishburne) and a sixth-year senior named Fudge (Ice Cube) to help him with his problems. These two characters try to teach Malik the best way to survive in his new environment. Rapaport plays Remy, a shy boy who has a hard time adjusting to Personals: college life until he is approached by a group of skinheads. Remy quickly falls into their world of hate. Also on campus is Kristen Conner (Kristy Swanson), a freshman whose family has run into some financial trouble. After an unpleasant experience at a frat party, Kristen is forced to reevaluate the many aspects - of her life. The movie deals with many issues of college life. It is about racism, homosexuality, rape, and violence. The acting in this movie is outstanding. Epps and Rapaport due excellent jobs in making their characters believable to the audience. This movie gives an excellent interpretation of how racism and other social problems exist on college campuses. I feel that this was John Singleton’s finest work. Although he was dealing with so many different issues, he showed how he could put it together and make it all work. On a scale from one to ten, I give Higher Learning an eight. Will You Be My Valentine? to recognize the differences between a noun and a verb. We are also here to Justin, learn about one another, to learn about and to appreciate everyone's culture and traditions. ‘accept that we are all the same. We're all human beings. Strip off the mask of ignorance, of fear, of resentment, or of hate. That type together. That learning and understanding of one another can not begin until we many more. Valentine’s Day. Thanks for four great years Hopefully, we will have I Love You. Happy Love, Carolyn of attitude can not work in the world which we live in today. It surely can not Dear Martin, work here at Penn State Delco. Read the material inside the covers. Lose thes sight of color.
