Page 6 — LION’SEYE — December 9, 1993 Fall Semester Ends on High By Mike Doyle As the semester comes to a close, Delco’s student clubs have come up with a host of activities to help the needy, encourage school spirit, and help students, faculty, and staff enjoy themselves more on campus. On Wednesday, November 24, the Multi-Cultural Association, along with the Black Student League, held its annual “Cultural Day.”- The event took place in the student lounge in the main building at common hour, and students were treated to a fashion show, ethnic dances, a music recital, and a Thanksgiving food fest. The Black Student League also joined together with the Lion Ambassadors to hold a food drive for the needy for Thanksgiving. In addition, the Adult Student Organization is still selling pretzles during common hour on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. For next semester, plans are being made to hold a semi-formal dance, and the Student Athletic Association is planning to expand its intramural program. Traffic Signal (Continued from Page 1) Just as other time and work- consuming projects, this one is also extremely money-consuming. The first estimate exceeds $500,000. With many other expenses, Delco cannot afford sucha “luxury.” The only hope is University Park, which promised to look into the proposal and decide on how much, or if, it is going to sponsor the plan. Media Township has already said “no way” when asked to provide funds, as the light would benefit Penn State almost exclusively. With the rate of accidents rapidly increasing, the project becomes a very vital issue. Fliers and petitions have been distributed around the campus to determine whether the students need, and want, the project to be carried out. If you see one, be sure to sign it. Letyour voice be heard. Let your safety and convenience be the number one priority to Penn State. Season’s Greetings! Concert Review: Garcia's Band Returns To Spectrum By s. cohoon November 16, 1993, brought the Grateful Dead’s guitarist Jerry Garcia back to town, this time with his own band, The Jerry Garcia Band. Playing the Spectrum, a large forum for Garcia’s solo act, provided an opportunity for many to see Garcia play (his solo shows rarely attract the sellout crowds that the Grateful Dead do). The Jerry Garcia Band, which formed during the seventies as a result of jam sessions on the Dead's nights Enter tainmer off, plays an eclectic mix of original and cover songs which all provide a launching pad for long guitar jams by Garcia. The November 16 show included oldies covers such as Second That Emotion and Stop That Train. This is one of the treats that makes going to see JGB fun: weird Jerry covers of oldies tunes. Unlike the Dead, whose playlist is never the same two nights in a row, JGB plays almost exactly the same show every night of a tour. Hence, there is not much reason for anyone, photo by: WES TOMLINSON aside from the true fanatic, to see more than one show per tour. Thisis another reason why tickets for JGB are so readily avaliable. Jerry Garcia Band shows are so non-indulgent of the crowd’s wishes that they never even play an encore. Also, the crowd is older than the crowd at Grateful Dead shows. There was almost no “scene” in the parking lot outside the show like there is at Dead shows. If you go to Dead shows to gawk at hippies and party, you might as well have stayed home. If,on the other hand, you want to see Jerry jam, a JGB show is the place for you. Prophecy: A New Hardcore Sound By Emmanuel Seabrooks Have you checked out any local bands in your area of lately? Let me introduce you to a hardcore band from Downingtown, PA, that is quickly gaining a high status in the Chester County area, and is sure to get your attention. Prophecy has taken their influences from heavy metal, hardcore punk, and urban rap, and has created a sound similar to groups like Murphy's Law and Biohazard. The band writes and prefers to perform its own music. They feel the biggest message in their lyrics are about the realities of life. They address issues of drug addiction, racism, and other social issues. The lyrics do not preach their messages; they just try to convey them to the audience. Guitarists Greg Alan and Amid Smith, who have played together for seven years, have always taken their music seriously, so it wasn’t hard to overlook bassist Nate Newland in 1991, the mighty drummer John Clvenger, and the latest addition lead vocalist Jason Trefz. The group has played numerous performances in the Chester County area. Sabatino’s M.C. Entertainment is just one of their stomping grounds. They also have headlined shows at Breakers, and played for many different summer events and other clubs. Even though they are have played in the Chester County only, they're still making plans to play at other clubs in other areas. Prophecy has just released a new EP of four songs. Two of them are “Choice,” a hard, fast paced jam , talking about life and its struggles and “Hardcore Reality” a hardcore/grunge jam in which Prophecy speaks out on drugs, rape, and injustice that we see on the news and sometimes hear about everyday. Prophecy is having a release party for their new EP on December 12 at Breakers nightclub located on Lincoln Highway in Frazer, PA. After listening to these guys, you'll never forget them. If you would like to receive a copy of their new EP, you can write to Prophecy at: C/O Mad Dog Entertainment 419 W.- Church St., Downingtown, PA 19335.
