Page 6 — LION’'SEYE — February 5, 1993 Entertainments Peter Gabriel Finds Love and Steam In ‘US’ By Kimberly Bartles Peter Gabriel’s latest compact disc entitled “US” is mostly about relationships, as the title connotes. The CD is a mixture of very peaceful relaxing songs and upbeat danceable songs. Gabriel is a master of moods. He takes you on a musical trip The inside of the CD cover displays various mixed media works of art by different artists that go along with each song. The artists are form all over the world; Scotland, Ireland, England, and Germany, to the USA and all the way to Israel, Ethiopia, Evrugo, and Cameroon. On the inside of the CD cover a quote from Gabriel is found, “Much of this record is about relationships. I am dedicating it to all those who have taught me about loving and being loved.” Half of the songs on the CD are about relationships and love. The first song entitled “Come Talk To Me” is a beautiful song about breaking down the barriers and talking to one another. Gabriel’s song entitled “Love to be Loved” is about needing comfort and, of course, love. A verse of the song I thought was full of emotion and feeling was “And in this moment, I need to be needed. With this darkness all around me, I like to be liked. In this emptiness and fear I want to be wanted.” The song entitled “Blood of Eden” has a very moving chorus to it. Gabriel has a way of singing that gives it a haunting quality. I was surprized to find that Sinead O’Connor sings backup vocals in the song. The “Blood of Eden” is about the union of man and woman in the Garden of Eden. Gabriel's songs have a way about them where you can close your eyes and see the music. Speaking of seeing music, I'm sure if you watch MTV you've seen Gabriel's computerized videos for the songs “Steam” and “Digging in the Dirt”. The videos themselves are works of art, let alone the songs. “Steam” is one of hie upbeat songs that puts you in a good mood. Gabriel has a way with words where they just bounce along in perfect rhythm whether they make sense or not. “Digging in the Dirt” is about searching through the past and coming to face with things that may have hurt. Gabriel has a wide variety of instruments in his music, some of them I had never heard of. He has sabar drums, a drum loop, shakers, telecasters, bagpipes, a doudouk, a tabla, a Ney flute, a djembe, a tama, a mandolin, a talking drum and a surdu. I really enjoy listening to the CD over and over again. I would recommend it if you're a Gabriel fan because it surpasses his past works, and even if you're not a fan, like I wasn’t, maybe you will be after you listen to it. rr —— MAD ER - oO (sv UNIoN 3z Library Displays Paintings By Chester County Artist The paintings of Chester County artist Steven Janney are currently on exhibit in the Library Lerning Center through February 10. Lawrence Rising Sun, the latest in a great line of works (The Andromeda Strain, Jurassic Park, and The Terminal Man to name a few) by Michael Crichton is definitely Required Reading. This book lures you into itself with the mysterious murder of a beautiful woman in a downtown L.A. office building on the night of its gala opening. It then grips the reader in a roller coaster ride of mystery, suspense, and more plot twists than you can shake a stick at. Just when you think you've figured it out, Mr. Crichton lets you know just why he is considered one of the best. It'll keep you in suspense until the end. But it’s much more than that. It delves into Ja)anese business practices and skims the the very culture of the country. As is normal with Michael Crichton, the novel is well researched and the author invites, no implores, that you read further into the subject of Japanese business practices. Some may say that Rising Sun harbors “Japan Bashing” or even racism. But there is no racism here, just the truth, the truth of America's unstable seat in the future of world economy. Rising Sun is soon to be released as a major motion picture "Mr. Crichton lets you know just why he is considered one of the best." starring Sean Connory and Wesly Snipes. All doubts about Mr. Crichton’s skill at crafting a suspenseful thriller are to be checked at the door. I'm giving Rising Sun four stars and two thumbs up.
