a a a ri — LION'SEYE— Page 7 December 6, 1991 THE FRONT DESK I am going to borrow from John Hancock and write this column in type large enough so that the king of England and you will see it, read it, and do something about it. Very recently I had a conversa- tion with one of our janitorial staff. Quite frankly, what I learned, made “me mad. This column should make you angry too, because what you will read here will tell you how some of your tuition money 1s spent on this campus. » Twice this semester, the jani- tors have had to scrape and scrub human waste matter, better know as s—t, from the walls and floors of two rest rooms on this campus. Regularly, the janitors spend twenty minutes in each classroom picking up from floors, radiators, and chalk rails partially filled soda cans and coffee cups. Then they can mop the floors to pick up the spilled soda and coffee. These two items happen before they can do their regular job, cleaning the boards, dusting the chalk rails, refilling paper towel dispensers, and emptying trash cans. | These very dedicated people are by Ed Tomezsko Campus Executive Officer those who you never see. They work over the night to make the campus presentable so that when you get here, it looks good. I am proud of the work they do. Here’s the point, they are tired of the human waste matter (s—t) on the walls and floors, and picking up the coffee cups, and picking up the soda cans, and mopping up the spilled soda and coffee from the floors of classrooms and hallways. So am I. These good people weren't hired to do these things and it embarrasses me that they have to. I am thankful that they are willing to make this place pre- sentable, despite some of the habits of our community members. If the cost of tuition bothers you - it bothers me - we must be atten- tive to our environment. We have much better ways to invest your tuition dollars: more library sup- port and equipment, better aca- demic equipment, more student ac- tivities. The list goes on, we have plenty of needs. But we spend valuable people and resources cleaning up shit. What do you want to do about it? ob
