Page 12 — LION’S EYE — December 6, 1991 Men’s Basketball Rebuilds to Destroy By Roger Lee PSU Delco’s men’s basketball head coach Bill Wiley is optimistic about this year’s team. “We may struggle early in the season, but I really believe come January and February we will become a force in the season. In the beginning the team will be feeling each other out, but we don’t want to peak in December.” This is a rebuilding year for the team, since only three students are returning from last year’s Basketball East Championship team. Under Coach Wiley, the men’s basketball team has won their regular season games for the past three years, and last season they also won a school record-setting 19 games. Their cumulative record for the past three years is 53 wins and 23 losses, while their league record is 24 wins and only 6 losses. Coach Wiley has been head coach here for six years. Before, he was assistant coach at Delaware County Community College and Malvern Prep. He was honored as Coach of the Year for Basketball East in 1989- 1990. He started coaching “because I love basketball, and, since I'm not a really good player I kept my foot in the door by coaching.” Wiley will be helped by assistant coached Lou Tosti and newcomer Tom Rayar. The Lions are getting set for their 25-game season by practicing six days a week. Because of some injuries and only thirteen players on the team, Coach Wiley says they are scrounging for players. Some of his best players so far this season are Danny Ineman, Jeff Becofeaber, and John Sneider. Last year’s returning players are Danny Ineman, Joe Geneomo, and Greg Branch. First game for the team was the annual “Tip-off Tournament” at home on Friday, November 22, 8 PM. Four teams played in the tournament: Manor Junior College, Delaware County Community College, Williamson Trade School, and PSU Delco. Saturday at 4 PM the two losers played a consolation game, and at 6 PM, the two winning teams played for the tournament title. Delco won the tournament, beating DCCC in the championship game 84-77 in overtime. In his six years coaching here, Wiley said the team has never gotten out of hand to require rules other than a dress code and riding on the bus to games. “This has been the most consistent team in three years, but the team to look out for this year is PSU Schuylkill, which has all of their players returning,” said Coach Wiley. Despite Injuries, The ‘Lady Lions’ Placed 2nd in EPCC By Kemba Vick The Penn State Delco County Campus Women’s Volleyball team finished their season off with a pretty impressive record. The “Lady Men’s V-Ball Seeks Players By Kemba Vick Penn State Delaware County Campus is looking for a few good men to join our Men's Volleyball team. Sign ups are going on now. If you have a talent for spiking the ball don’t keep it a secret. The men’s volleyball season starts in late January, and Coeach Sabba is looking for some raw talent to take the Lions all the way. According to Coach Sabba the team needs some real power to take the division by storm. “This year the division is full of real rough competition. They've added three new schools, one of then being Mullenberg, which special recruits its players from all over the world.” With the the already fierce rivals of Kutztown and Mansfield it looks like the Lions are in for a exciting season. Any gentlemen who isn’t afraid to sweat can let that Nittany Spirit flow. Run right over to the Athletic Commons Building, whip out that ink pen, and sign up to lead us to victory! Lions" placed second in the EPCC Division, which consists of are Community Colleges, and fell one game short of the play -offs. According to Coach Robert Sabba, talent-wise the team was great , but team turnouts were poor. “We had a really good team, but a lot of the players worked and had school work to do. Often there would be only one person at practice.” He also mentioned that he would barely have the minimum six players for the team. “I would have to call someone up just so we would have enough so we wouldn't have to forfeit the game.” Injuries also plagued the team. Midway through the season Cassie Gliem injured her leg . With her being one of the star players this really hurt the teams chances of a Division Title. Coach Sabba doesn’t regret the season, and is very hopeful for next year.
