Page 8 — LION'S EYE — ‘Diskin Begins 10th Season: Recruits Nineteen Freshmen by Angela Deal After a very good try-out camp in June, PSU Delco has recruited. nineteen freshmen to join six returning sophomores for the fall baseball team. Some of the key sophomores include last years MVP, catcher Chuck Bannon, catcher Doug Steimel and outstanding defensive first baseman, Dan Bellopede. Leading the team’s freshman players are Steve Pallini, a shortstop from Upper Darby who played for the Carpenter's Cup team, Mike Boebert a second team pitcher from St. James, Sean Dalton, a number two pitcher from Archbishop Carroll who received honorable mention, and Kevin Walsh, a pitcher who played with the Delaware Valley league. ; Coach Jim Diskin, who is in his tenth year coaching, feels the team’s infield and pitching are strong. He feels “the team has a chance to be a really highly competitive team and should grow if the nineteen freshman stay”. This year, for the first time since 1982, the team will have three left- handed hitters. ‘With this factor and the team’s four good, young starting pitchers, our home-field advantage is enhanced. According to Diskin our field is more of a pitcher's park than the Astrodome, which gives us a real advantage. In addition, the level of support is good. Diskin feels this is a big factor as well; it is good for the team’s spirit and adds to the intimidation factor. This attitude carries out into the field. According to Diskin they have -a good defense; they don’t rely on power. “We steal bases and we run, like St. Louis and Houston”. With this good attitude the team hopes to make it to the play offs at the end of September. For the past three years PSU Delco has made it to the CCAC play offs, but has lost in the first round every time. This year Diskin is hoping to change that and possibly even reach the EPCC play offs. Although Delco’s women’s volleyball team is losing a big middle hitter, the team is expecting a good setter and a couple of energetic players from Ridley High School. Delco’s team has lost three starters and have three coming back, and still have a strong co-captain, Casey Gliem. People are hearing about the team more and ‘more, which should make for a good turn out of players and fans alike. Even though the Coach and team are confident, they need one more tall person, “at least a six footer”, according to Saba, who would like to see. more people try out and is hoping for more team support by students. The lack of support is bad for the players’ spirits, and “makes each game more like a scrimmage”, says Saba. Despite the sometimes empty bleachers, Saba feels very good about this season and is ready to coach a winning team. Practice starts as soon as school starts, so any interested persons must act quickly and are almost assured a position on the team. Watch for sign-up notices. INTERESTED IN ANY FALL SPORTS?
