May, 1991 — LION'S EYE — Page 7 Volleyball Team Posts Impressive 12-1 Record By Robert “GQ” Cunningham This year’s Men's Volleyball Team had the best season in Delco’s History!!! The team produced an impressive 12-1 record to finish second in the league, falling behind first place Villanova by just one game. The last three regular season matches Delco’s opponents didn’t even win a single game. In addition, Delco finished second In the CCAC tournament. On March 21 the team continued their early season winning ways by traveling to Haverford College and beating their team in three straight games. The following Friday The Temple Owls came to PSU. Temple was one of the worst teams in the league. So our Lions had no problem knocking them off. On April 1 our Lions were all set to play Northeastern at home. After three games the match was over. PSU Delco added yet another victory to an already impressive season. Then LaSalle University’s forfeited because a victory wouldn't have given them a chance to advance in the overall standings. With the regular season over, the Volleyball team had two tournaments to attend before the scason was officially over. The first of these tournaments was the league tournament. Where Delco played “matched up most of the same teams that they played during the regular season. Penn State Delco started out slow by losing the first game to PSU Berks but then winning all of the rest of their games until the play-offs. In the first round of the play-offs Delco knocked off Widener in two games. The next round brought a surprise not only to Delco but to the rest of the tournament players as well. Our local heroes were knocked off by Northeastern College in three games. The shock of being knocked out of the tournament early on took its toll on the team’s spirit an confidence. Villanova remained undefeated and won the tournament as well. The last tournament of the year was the CCAC Tournament at University Park. This time we were against the Commonwealth campuses of Penn State University. There were a total of ten schools at the tournament. Delco and Berks all but dominated their divisions, with both teams remaining undefeated. Delco’s semi- final match had them pitted against Ogontz. The first game of the best of three series ended in a hurry! Delco SHUT-OUT Ogontz 15-0 !!! In the second game Ogontz improved but, they scored only five points, As Delco Dismantled Ogontz 15-5. Several key blasts were sent over the New SGA Officers Discuss Plans for ‘91-92 Continued from Page 1 He felt that the elections ran very smoothly. Chris was pleased to see there was no “mud slinging” during the elections. He thinks “because of the fair play, there was no tension between us. It was a very hard race, but we all stayed friends throughout it. Never-the-less, Bill Raymond, Larry Ulmer, and I are going to work very close together next year. If we all put our ideas together, we can really help make next year great.” As far as plans go next year, Chris Cowan will be addressing such issues as academic advising as well as trying to establish a MAC machine on campus, possibly next to the book store. He will be meeting with different banks over the summer in order to find the right one to support this idea. “We have a really good year in store for everybody next semester. Every year is new, and we always get new blood. I plan on getting those people who are new, who don’t know anything about student government and tell them all about it in order to get a variety of different ideas, which we will be able to combine into one, making this campus the best it can be” replied Chris. “One of the biggest plans I have is that I will be visible on campus, not just in the Lion’s Den. I want to be on campus walking around, saying “hi” and just talking to people. I would like to get everybody's input. I would also like to talk with students who do not know anything about SGA and ‘ust try and make them aware of what is going on,” promises new president Chris Cowan. According to new Vice-President Dianna Cahall, her position as V.P. has just been modified slightly. The vice-president of student government also has to be the president of student activities (which she already is). Dianna would like to really try and work on is getting more people to ~ attend programs. “I haven't come up with a way to do that yet, but getting more people to attend programs and having more programs. is one of my - main goals,” replied Dianna. Dianna is very excited about winning. She knew she was unopposed as V.P. and felt very positive about that. Dianna remarked, “I'm really glad Chris won. ‘Bird’ and I worked together this semester and last, and we have a lot of the same goals. We have a lot of good ideas we plan on doing for next year.” She feels that the current SGA has done a lot of leg work for future student governments, not just for next year, but for years to come. She thinks they really structured the student government well,as far as how she’s heard its been in the past. They even reconstructed the Lion's Den over the summer. “It is going to be great working along with the other new officers. They're going to have new ideas and new opinions about everything,” she explained,”We are going to have a great year, and I think the four of us are going to work really well together. The election was tough, but it went well. I'm really excited about next year.” Secretary, Greg Branche, plans to get more participation out of the student body next year. He feels that in order for campus activities to have a better turnout, they have to meet the interest of the student. He is looking forward to getting to know the other new SGA members over time and in the summer as they prepare for the fall semester. Gioia Gaudioso, Delco’s new Treasurer, also agrees that next year is going to be great. “I'm excited about next year because it gives me the opportunity to work with different club members, to be involved, and to meet so many new people,” said Gioia. She feels good about winning, and predicts. that they are going to make a good team together. net which were never returned. After Berks Beat McKeesport in two Games. The two undefeated teams locked horns, with Berks winning the first of the three game series. This first loss was the most important game of the season ‘because with a 9-4 lead Delco lost a key player to an injury, it seemed to break the good attitude of our Delco Lions. The constant collision of attitudes seem to break apart the Lions. : The second game brought many new dimensions to Delco’s Volleyball team, because of the injury the line-up had to be shuffled The team ended up winning the second game 15-13. As the third an final game started, Berks jumped ahead and never looked back, winning the third game 15-11. For a team that had so little backing or support from the school, the players did surprisingly well. To the boys in black and blue ( Camel Jockey, Tony-Tony-Tony, Roll-o, Helium, Hairy the House, Air Hatt, Saba Jr., Spike, The Krusher, GQ, Loy-boy, Fly-boy, Fishman, and RrrUuuNnnKkkk), “Ya done good, Keep your heads up and good luck!” Looking Back At '90-'91 Continued from Page 5 February marked Black History Month. SAC and the BSL presented the Freedoms Theatre acting group, storytellers, lecturers, all of which were attended by SGA representatives, mainly Treasurer Michelle Walsh and myself. SADD sponsored a Beef and Beverage for Valentine’s Day and the Adult Student Organization had their traditional Chat ‘N’ Cheese nights. February 8 was he Heroes Day Parade. We went out to the Media Courthouse to show our undivided support for our friends and family in the Gulf. The SGA also had a ribbon tying ceremony at the Lion’s Den at which people like Dr. Tomezsko and Vietnam veteran Mr. Coleman gave us their thoughts and feelings. A special thanks to Aaron Coury for the prayer. Spring Break, hypnotist in the Student Lounge, and SGA’s “Happy Hour” for St. Patrick’s Day were the big events of March. Then in April the race for Student Government hopefuls for next year began. Speeches, campaigning, and elections had the candidates on their toes. The thing 1 was looking most forward to all year was Spring Week. The week included Earth Day, Blue and White carnation sales, SADD’s Virgin Drink Contest, and the Spring Picnic. April 20 was the ultimate party on campus when we had a Drive-In Theatre right here in our parking lot! Looking back, I am very impressed with what most of the clubs and organizations have accomplished this year. I must thank everyone for their guidance and support. Our advisors, the faculty, staff, the students, and those who made an effort to be involved.
